New n-stream update

Posted by: Tog on 15 December 2010

Update available now via app store - no sign of iPad version yet. Seems to be mainly focused around NDX comparability and small bug fixes.

Still testing

Only got to play with it for a few minutes this morning.
Definitely seemed a little snappier.
No background multi-tasking support though! The app still has to re-launch each time you switch back to it.

Someone here aware of release notes about the latest version - the only one item I found in google is "Added support for UnitiQute", but I don't think this is very up to date. It'd be nice to know what's been done prior to decide to upgrade or not, wouldn't it?

From the product listing in the iTunes store:-

hmm, I should look at this when I'm at home - I suspect something is blocked here at work in background, because I'm not able to see neither your picture nor itunes store :-(. Or "communications break down" because of the snow in the city :-)
Anyway, sorry for the as it seems silly question

works now - thanks!

Spent a few days with it - seems slightly faster working with TogServe although I can't spot the faster album art improvements.

Tog on the vortexbox can it communicate via esata if the computer has it?

I would check the website but it seems to be down (sunday morning)

I can't see any improvements so far - it takes a lot longer to update / show the items on my iPhone compared to the indications on the Qute's screen... Perhaps one needs something more powerful than my "outdated" iPhone 3G - pity.

well yeah!!! At least get a 3Gs or roll back to pre 4.0 OS. Ever since the OS4 released the 3G have become unusable.

I'm fairly sure VB and Fedora can use esata but it depends how you want to use your drives. VB defaults to recognising internal drives for OS and music storage. It has a wide range of disk tools and can create all manner of partitions including ones that span several drives. External USB drives are usually used to back up your files rather than store new music. I'm making the not too clever assumption that you want to use an external esata drive for storage rather than backup which May need a bit of CL and tweaking. There are numerous people out there to hold your hand and there isn't much that can't be done in Linux if you have the time and the inclination.

Any idea why my version does not seem to be updated? I have it installed on an iPod and iPad but neither seems to be identifying an update is available.

OK

So I had the same problem as Bruce, when using my ITouch to access the App store - no updates. Went into ITunes which told me that NStream had 1 update. Pulled 1.3 down into ITunes and did a sync. ITunes tried to do the update but told me that I needed an updated OS level in my ITouch - as far as I am aware it is up to date.

Any ideas?

Check the version of your itouch (Settings>General>About). I believe the latest version is 4.2.1 (8C148).

Yeh

So it needs Ios 4.1. Itouch 1st Gen only goes up to 3.1.3. Therefore another £200 for another Itouch or I am stuck with the initial release of n-Stream.

Fraid to say that Naim's ongoing inability to ship an ipad app tipped me in the direction of not buying another Unitiqute.

Strange decision making process Jon, current nstream app works just fine on the iPad though I agree it's not a perfect fitSmile new one on the way. Available as soon as it's finished.

Cmon, I played with the beta version of the ipad app which was publicly demonstrated at the Cedia show in *June*.

Lucky God didn't say to Moses "err Beta version of Ten Commandments ...erm will ship Gold Master as soon as they are finished!"

In fairness to Naim, Unitiqute shipped late August after being shown at CES in early January. Thats some 9 months.

So the June showing of ipad app suggests a February 2011 availability.

I apologise, Paul. Clearly you are still bang on schedule...

Feb 2012?

Smile Jon sorry you are not correct, you may have seen the ilinx app for ipad which controls naimnet and this is available from the App store.
If you did see anything controlling uniti it would have been the n-stream app x2 on the ipad, which is also available now and has been for several months.
Allen- have a merry xmas.
The new n-stream app for ipad which will be a free update for existing n-stream app owners will be ready as soon as its finishedSmile March likely.

I can just imagine the cycle of events, Naim think, right chaps we should think about iPad apps for nStream and nServe, let's get busy, we don't want to be left behind now do we? Hmmm, what version are we on ... ohhh yes 3.3.1, right let's write some code, no dead-line so no rush. Right let's show this at a show and get peoples initial impressions. Ok let's tweak it following suggestions. Ok nearly ready to go. Ohhh s**t, Apple are moving onto IOS 4.2 for the iPad, what does that mean for our code. Damn it, we need to re-write half the code, and we can add a few more bells 'n' whistles, because of the added features Apple have made. How long's that going to take? Well it takes as long as it takes, it will be available when finished. Anyway, let's aim for some time in the New Year. Ohhh s**t, Apple are releasing new betas for IOS ........

Sorry, but it really isnt like that at all. "Rewrite half the code" is simply not the case here to go from one iOS build to another. "Press the recompile button and spit out a new version is more like it". At least thats how it worked for *my* code and the private corporate apps I'm involved with.

Naim is very aware of my view of their software development process. Unfortunately, this latest release does little to change that view.

And at £24.99 and £22.99 for their apps, when their competitors are free (apple for remote), free (meridian sooloos), 5.99/4.99/3.49 (for ipeng, squeemote, squeezecast for squeezebox). OK, SongBook DS is 29.99 and ChorusDS HD is 24.99 but at least they exist for ipad *today*, and neither are from Linn so there is no possibility of cross subsidy based on value-add hardware sales. Naim can hardly claim their premium pricing gets you a premium development and upgrade process.

Check with your staff please. It was presented to me as the naim ipad app version. It didnt look anything like the iLinx app, and it certainly wasnt anything at x2.
Posted on: 22 December 2010 by Paul Stephenson
no need you got it wrong sorry it was the ilinx app for naimnet or x2 n-stream. Maybe you were having an off day, input wise.
