New n-stream update
Posted by: Tog on 15 December 2010
Update available now via app store - no sign of iPad version yet. Seems to be mainly focused around NDX comparability and small bug fixes.
Still testing

Heavy snow - lying in bed - playing with Apple Remote 2
Totally wireless Mac network - playing music on nearest IMac (surprisingly good speakers for a PC)
Simply works - very quick - great cover art - superb ergonomics - simply stunning on the IPad.
It's not fair I know - can't work the Uniti - shouldn't compare it to N-stream etc etc ..
The competition is out there Paul and they are good.
Remote was good at v1 - a one man team at Apple.
March is too late.

Is this a private argument or can anybody join in?

Hi Guys,
Steve H from Naim R&D software here.
As you may of noticed we released a new version of the nStream app the other day. It was primarily for the NDX release but it has wrapped up some new stuff and also chews off the various bugs discovered since initial launch.
One area that is new is the album art cache manager. On the previous version the cache manager would only auto download the current screens worth of images into the persistent cache. In the new version it priorities on the current viewable area and then in the background does all the other images that it can handle. This avoids the issue of scrolling down the list and finding that the cache has not been populated for those other albums.
For nStream the latest generation of iPhone and iTouch gives a nicer user experience response wise, as the new iOS's grind a bit on the older devices and the XML decoding need to be done by nStream can hit the older generation processors hard.
In regards to the iPad app, this project is actively on the way and well into the coding stage. As JonH points out it is perfectly feasible to port to iPad pretty quick, but often the end result is not great as it ends up not using the benefits of all that screen real-estate. Great for time to market, but hey, customers deserve a real iPad app for their system and not just a giant native resolution iPhone app!
There has been comments about Naim charging for the app and it is a bit of a sensitive subject. Some manufacturers incorporate the price of the app into the price of the product, so if you use it or not, you have basically paid for it. As we have designed the product range so they will work out of the box with the supplied remote and have really pushed hard to give maximum value for money in the Uniti range, it felt it was better to charge separately for the app. Of course we really appreciate feedback from our customers and if the 'hidden' pricing model is preferred then we will consider this in the future.
Behind the scenes we've been working hard on the Uniti range and over the next year will have lots of top new features coming to the platform. So watch this space ... the Naim R&D software department keyboards are running at max key presses per second at the moment!
May I wish you all a great Christmas and new year.
Regards
Steve

My apologies - thanks to Steve H for the points raised.

Thanks paul
Whilst I might gripe at specific annoyances (and lack of ipad support is a real gripe for me as a Unitiqute customer), clearly Naim is holding its head up high in the current financial difficulties affecting all markets
Steve: thanks for the comments. Of course an ipad app is not going to be code identical to an iphone one, and there will definitely be some platform specific sections and dependencies: not only for the UI, but also caching and other optimisations due to differing amounts of ram on the various apple platforms for example. However, its just very frustrating to be waiting and waiting in a vacuum of information, no beta testing and so forth. Hopefully 2011 will allow for some expanded resource in software development.
Best to all at the factory for a strong 2011.

Check with your staff please. It was presented to me as the naim ipad app version. It didnt look anything like the iLinx app, and it certainly wasnt anything at x2.
Hi Jon,
The iPad on the stand was running the Beta version of the iLinX HD application for NaimNet - at that time *ALL* it would control was the audio on NaimNet so that may be where the mixup is coming from?
That App is now finalised and is up on the AppStore with full NaimNet functionalty.
At the show we only had iPod Touches (and our own iPhones) running the (then Beta) n-Stream application - It definitely wasn't even running at x2 on the iPad that we had at the show as we'd only just picked up that unit and hadn't at that stage included it's UDID in the development build details (in fact its UDID still isn't included in our dev build kit).
Now it's Christmas - can we all kiss and hug and be merry?

Thanks for the confirmation, Phil. I rememeber you showing me a beta app on the ipad, and clearly I misunderstood where it had come from.

Merry Christmas to you too Tog ...
Don't know about you guys but I fully intend to spend as much of it as possible keeping warm and toasty watching crappy Christmas movies (on the projector now I have the screen up) and revisiting the long forgotten music in my collection that still has zero hits!

Hi Steve,
I am going to buy a uniqute in the next week or so. If I buy now the n-stream application on my IPAD, will it be free for me to access the real IPAD version once it will be released. Or should I wait?

This has been confirmed by Paul Stephenson, the expected iPad apps for both nServe & nStream will be free upgrades if you already have the iPod/iPhone version.
Thank the Lord!
Soon - please
