Where do they fit in the overall scheme of things? Fluff or serious music? I'm no expert and keep thinking I should listen much more as I've loved everything I've heard. Sharp witty lyrics and beautiful melodies. Were they the quality pop music of their time? And they seem a bit dangerous too. When I was a lad for example is a hilarious piss take of British establishment of the time and I expect it ruffled a few feathers.
I've only heard compilations and would appreciate some advice on where to start if I'm to get appreciate them fully.

I didn't really enjoy G&S until I saw the movie Topsy Turvey. It explains why the Mikado is so important, the times, and the music is wonderful on stage. Sullivan really wanted to break away and write serious music in the movie.
I'm sure they ruffled feathers but I've always found Brits love making fun of themselves which is why G&S were so popular. I'd put them into popular stage music which isn't opera, just like Broadway. Can be good entertainment with a good production and cast or it falls apart, the same way a 2nd rate opera production does.

This arrived today and I'm listening to HMS Pinafore at the moment. First impressions are that the sound is outrageously good for being more than sixty years old. However there are some digital chirrups in there but it doesn't lessen my enjoyment of When I was a lad. It's become one of my favourite songs in the past year or so.
I'd say it's a good starting point if like me you're new to G&S.
