2011 forum update

Posted by: Paul Stephenson on 30 December 2010

We will be making a major update to the forum to a new platform early January, yes there maybe some pain but in the long run it will enable us to improve the overall service, look and feel and also better integrate into our main site. We will also be able to plan communications better and have control zones to help with topical support issues of the day. There will also be app control.
We have been promised NO INFO WILL BE LOST and all of your personal details will be carried over.
We will have a lot of room to adjust the visuals and will allocate an area for your feedback so that we can nip and tuck areas that meet the most negative feedback, if any Winker
Wishing you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR

The clearer separation of posts is not a bad thing, now just get the bloody software working on an iPad.

Posted on: 20 July 2011 by MilesSmiles

... well, maybe I spoke too soon, what is my signature doing attached right to my post -- with no separation?

Posted on: 20 July 2011 by tonym

A disaster! Please put it back.

Posted on: 20 July 2011 by hego99

This forum is the worst I've ever seen design/layout-wise ... and I think I've seen a few.

One wonders what the people at Naim are really thinking, have they lost their marbles completely?

Posted on: 20 July 2011 by Gale 401

Its taken seven months to make it even worse ??

You cant edit posts now and when you click on a post it takes you to the thread start post so you have to scroll the whole page to get to it.

Posted on: 20 July 2011 by Mike-B

Not a moan,  just info for Naim

In case no one has noticed,  the new changes that appeared overnight do not go straight to the latest added post if you click on the new post button,  it then opens at the top of the page (first post) or if its a long thread the top of the last page.  This means you have to scroll down to the new post.

The clock is still not sycronised with the world clock,  I am on GMT time

The time is 10:02 it shows up as 09:02

That is a moan

For heaven's sake Mike, for someone who understands FM like you do, understands electricity, and can build cabinets!!!!........ Go to Manage (top right), then Personal Settings, then Look and Feel, then select GMT +1 in the time settings.

I think you might have to change it back at the autumn equinox but let's not spoil the summer worrying over it!

Too busy working on retirement & enjoying the summer Chris.

But I do need to keep up the grumpy ol' git stuff or people will think I'm going soft

I just don't see why the simple stuff can't get done,  even the Purple Flounder Mire can do that.

Cheers Mike.

About the forum as it is now:

In the city where I live, the bin men are on strike. Some people are moaning about the rubbish piling up and the binmen not doing their job. Others are taking direct action and taking their rubbish to the depot themselves.........

Maybe it's time for direct action.

Great idea,  we could use Stu's (Gale 401) bin

Posted on: 20 July 2011 by totemphile

Dear Paul,

Why not put up an official thread where constructive feedback is requested from us, i.e. what would we like the forum to look like and what changes do we believe need to be made to make this an enjoyable forum again? Such an "official poll", if the feedback is then acted upon, will most likely lead to much better results than the current version.

Best regards

tp

Already had two of those.

$5 says it is because you call them "binmen".

TP, there have been two such threads and the feedback was very good. I think Naim know what they would like but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll happen, whether straight away or ever. Naim have to work with hoop-la and that means give and take and a degree of understanding on both sides. Going back to the old format is not an a available option it seems without losing a lot of the forum's valuable past. So for now it's between a rock and a hard place it seems...

One good thing though. It's noticeably easier to administrate via the iPhone on safari now. Just a shame that step forward seems to have cost a step back elsewhere. Next update please...?

Although we may be divided by a common language, I think our enthusiasm for Naim is shared. I made a point about responsibility.

At some point rather than moan about the behaviour or actions of others, we can decide to take actions of our own. At least that's what I would do if I was as dissatisfied a user of this forum as some here appear to be.

Richard,

Yes I am aware of those threads. I was just thinking that it might be helpful to gather feedback in the context of the existing Hoop.la forum and how to improve that. My interpretation of the situation was that, as you say, Naim are invested in Hoop.la and that chances of switching to an entirely new forum architecture and design are, therefore, highly unlikely.

Tbh, I actually think that the forum is ok in many ways but it needs some tweaking now and for this constructive feedback might be helpful. A lot of good feedback, although possibly not presented in the nicest way, has already been given in John's "Hoop.less does itself proud...." thread.

But as you say I am sure Naim have their own ideas of where they would like to go with this forum. It just seems Hoop.la either don't listen or maybe Naim got it wrong themselves with regards to what sticks with customers and what doesn't.

I personally think this site looks way too much like a social networking site, pretty pictures and all, who's online, etc. Problem is there are hardly any 14 year olds here on the forum. Plus, as it has been mentioned before, the tags are pretty useless, there already is a search function if you need it, and the whole navigation column on the right is taking up way too much space, to the point where the essential, i.e. peoples' comments are suffering. They are a pain to read, even more so now than before. What's this forum's purpose? It's to communicate ideas / contributions in a clear and immediately accessible fashion, the less faffing around the better, no gimmicks needed. Hoop.la is trying way too hard.

Just my thoughts. In the end we all want the same, I hope we get there.... eventually.

Thanks!

To me the folk who control the layout of the site do not seem to be prepared to provide it in the way that is best for its users. When I first used a word processor, it was on a Commodore computer with a 40 character screen; one of the biggest improvements was when I went to the Amiga computer and it had an 80 character screen for Vizawrite. Looking back, there were lots of shortcomings in that software by today's standards, but when they gave me the ability to use the whole screen I forgot those - it was to me THE most important feature.

I can't understand why it is so difficult to change the layout and lose the right hand column so that we can could enjoy the full width of the screen. I can't see any use for the right hand column. No other forum I've seen has the redundant right hand column feature.

The second design idiosyncrasy is the trapping of the posting window in the frame of the main site. Again I've not seen this done elsewhere.

I doubt there is a single forum user who would not prefer to be able to use the full screen width and have a separate window for posting. Moreover, I think these two enhancements would completely change the perception of the forum. This is only two minor changes for hoop.la, but would make a massive difference to Naim and its community of forum users.

Naim equipment is (mostly) very easy to use - once set up you can just play music on it. Same goes for a good forum - you want to be able to read posts and create posts not struggle with the controls and layout.

Thanks Naim or Hoopla

The last (new) post button now goes to the last post in the thread

1 down -  maybe world clock syncro & full width text screen next - pleeze

Guy -

Thank you for articulating exactly what is wrong with this forum:  lose the right hand column, and launch a separate window for composing replies.   These improvements have been suggested many times, and mostly ignored.  Paul did say one time that he was doing us the courtesy of not using the right hand column for advertising....

Mike-B -

Thank you for confirming what I was seeing too.  For a day, it was always back to the top, but now it does seem to remember last post read!  Maddening!

This tells me that someone at Hoop-la is paying attention!  Fixes and mini-updates are happening, and the forum is not frozen between major updates.

Now if they would only pay attention to the daily, unanimous feedback.  MAKE THESE TWO CHANGES....PLEASE!   How freaking hard can it be?

Hook

PS - Just in case someone is listening, gremlins are not available on my iPad.  :-(

These two features NEED TO BE FIXED and have featured on the "please fix" list for MONTHS
Hoopless won`t do it. End of story
That, in my opinion says it all about Hoopless. I don`t know what hold they have over Naim, but clearly they do have some sort of hold and are using it most aggressively.
Its just as well that Naim have a loyal following whereby some of their members are willing to put up with this disaster and continue to support the forum DESPITE hoopless.
Cheers
Don

Why is this if the product or service is not how you would have it?

I used to use another brand of amplifier decades ago and when I had a problem the repsonse from the maker was poor. So I moved to another brand and I am still here 29 years later.

Exactly, even Hope.Less own site states:-

From http://www.hoop.la/plans

If I want to leave, can I export my data?

Yes, you can. For now, it will be a manual process (you'll need to send us a request at http://help.socialstrata.com). In the future, we're looking to add an export function from the control panel directly.

About time to do the right thing, and put Hope.Less out of our misery. Preferably with a large shovel.

Stu actually spoke to me about doing that, we might sort it out.
