Music Sales in the UK down 7% year on year. It would be interesting to see how specialist music performed versus the general market.

I am not surprised. We are a very musical household, well at least I am. This year, there was not one musical request on the Christmas list from my two kids. But there was game after computer game - that's where the young ones are interested nowadays.

Not surprised, can't recall the last time I stepped into one of their stores. 99% of my spend is online or with small independent record stores.

HMV still insist they can charge £16, or now even £17 for an ECM disc. Those days are gone and I walk out every time.

A few years ago I would have considered it a sad sign of the times, now I just don't care.

I feel lucky that there are a few outstanding independents in the vicinity that I can use when I fancy a musical browse...

I'll check in store if I'm passing. Maybe to look for a specific album, but as they insist on charging £15 or 16 quid then I go some where else, probably on line.
I might buy in the 2 for £10 or other sale items.

I bought a couple of cds in their sale in Glasgow at the weekend but their usual prices are absurd. I buy regularly online from them as their prices there are generally competitive.

I for one a few years back would have been sorry to see HMV in this trouble but not now. The prices that HMV charge for music is criminal they have also missed the boat on the downloading culture by not getting into that at an earlier stage. They have had it all their way for far to long. Not sorry to see them go the sooner the better. Greed should be their name not HMV

His Master Vanishes.....A total lack of imagination on the directors part in my view. It has been a terrible shop for years with such limited stock. So much more could be made of the download culture in a public place to share knowledge.....

Meh. I mourned them when they left NY maybe 10 years ago. They were vastly superior to Virgin and Tower in their day but the sun long ago set on that business.

You still have JR World which I have always found very good on price and selection. Long may they last.

The big one on Oxford Street is fantastic for all genres of music but as others have mentioned prices are ludicrous if you want something thats not a re-issue, remaster or chart CD, as for the local ones they are pathetic for their range of music its not worth setting foot inside one and it seems from this news many are in agreement.

I work in and visit HMV in Birmingham - our second city, where HMV have 3 stores in the city centre.
They are all crammed full of DVD's. I couldn't find an interesting new release by an acclaimed, but "niche" Birmingham artist - Joanne Shaw Taylor - in any of them.
I agree with earlier posts, there has been a criminal lack of imagination by the leaders of their business, they have nothing to differentiate their offering - Amazon wins every time - and as a committed music buyer it really wouldn't matter to me if they disappear, they've made themselves irrelevant.

A Borders store in a retail park close to my closed down a year or so ago. I was a regular visitor there. They had mags, books, CDs, DVDs and a brace of other stuff crammed in.
HMV/Waterstones took over the store a few months back, and I've been in twice. The store is the same size, but somehow they have less CDs, less DVDs, and less books. And no magazines. More space, less stock = lower sales.
It's not rocket science to see what's wrong here.

Yes this is true, they still have a great selection unlike big box retailers. The last time I went there though the aisles were pretty sparse, but hopefully they were just doing inventory during the holiday break.
