Who will be the next Ipswich Town manager?

After Sunday's X-rated showing on the BBC - surely Mr K should live up to his words
Keane told BBC Radio Suffolk: "I do feel I can turn things around. But you need that time and support and sometimes you don't get that - I live in the real world." Keane, who resigned as Sunderland manager two years ago this week, added: "If the morning comes and I don't think I can turn things around, I'm not one for hanging around."
It is often said some managers lack a Plan B, but in this case we lack a Plan A.
I know Roy is a nice guy and we have all been behind him, but we have to move on - yes I know the first Budgies goal was handball, yes I know Holt divided to get Delaney sent off, yes I know the referee had all Delia's cook book's and seemed to be wearing a Squawkers shirt, but we were woeful.
I'd like the board to give Sir Paul Mariner a call.

Probably
RK's got to go. After all the excuses last season, and the better start this, it's now going down the pan. When RK came I recall him saying "two seasons to get Ipswich promoted". Well it ain't happening this season mate, so time to do the decent thing.

I don't know much about Stan's managerial record - liked him as a player, but I'd like somebody with club connections if possible - hence Paul Mariner would be first choice with Terry Butcher right up there too.
However I feel the board will want a name - so Ray Wilkins would be no surprise or, preferably, Glen Hoddle.
Still if we win the Carling Cup and can win at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup then .....
Roy has us trying to play football at all times and we just aren't very good - we need a bit less Man Utd and a bit more Stoke City to move up the table. That's how we won the league with Sir Alf

Poor old Stan's managerial record was second to none (in reverse)
Himself and Ray had a famous falling out.
I can't help liking Roy, flawed maybe, but perhaps that's what I like.
However at the moment I think I'd just slightly prefer Alex. Perhaps just perhaps Roy would not have handled Rooney quite the same way!

I'd like the board to give my cat a ring ROTF - I was embarrassed after watching yesterdays shambles - very Duncan era like!!!

I'd go for that - in fact Roy tried to fill the team with ex-black cats.quote:I'd like the board to give my cat

Ipswich have, of course, enjoyed the services of some of the finest managers in England, in terms of ability, stature and integrity.
What a contrast to appointing an appalling thug who, by his own brainless admission, tried to seriously injure a fellow professional accompanied by the outburst "take that you ****".
I don't care how good a player people thought he was, I hope Town appoint someone more in their former image soon. In the meantime, you can have George Burley back...if you like.

After a superb display against West Brom, it was back down to earth - we completely outplayed the Swans for an hour and then they scored and we buckled under pressure. We were mot helped by the bizarre decisions of Andy D'Urso (why does the Championship always get the Premier League rejects); he definitely cost us the game failing to give a stonewall penalty and while he was inexplicably dismissing our appeals, they went to the other end and scored.
I can't help feeling we need a new manager and a fully fit Connor Wickham
Bring back Jon Stead, Danny Haynes and Jordan Rhodes

Putting aside the intriguing description of Roy Keane as a "nice guy" I have to say that the alternatives had me laughing out loud. The reality is that Ipswich, no offence intended, are a mid-table Championship club with little money to spend and as much chance of making the Premiership as... well, about a dozen other Championdhip clubs. Sometimes success is relative and much as most fans HATE to accept that it doesn't make it any less true.
Back in 1997 I heard a story about a Wrexham fan who snorted with derision at the idea that finishing just outside the League One play offs four years running amounted to something that we'd one day look back on as a "golden age". I ain't laughing now.
Roy Keane is performing miracles to keep Ipseich where they are. Sometimes, for all the declared ambitions of promotion within a timescale, mid-table with some good or bad runs is all you can expect.
Does that sound negative? Oh yes. Bur deny the truth at your peril. You'll end up with a Mike Ashley!

I think we have some good players and had even better ones, but Roy seems tactically naive and unable to get the best from his squad. Plus some of his signings are bizarre. We showed against West Brom that we could hold our own against better teams, but we don't play like that every week.
Or golden age will not return I realise that - Cooper, Burley, Mills, Hunter, Beattie, Wark, Thijssen, Muhren, Mariner, Whymark, Woods + a subs bench with Baxter, Osman, Butcher, Viljoen, Gates, Brazil, Crawford, Philips and Marcus Stewart. We won the league, the cup, the Texaco cup and the EUFA cup. I'm not asking for a return to the great days - just a bit of fight and spirit.
We have the best young player in the league in Connor Wickham, but Keane released Owen Garvan, Darren Ambrose, Jon Stead, Danny Haynes and Jordan Rhodes.
Blackpool are doing well in the Premier League and are wonderful to watch; Stoke have slowly built and excellent side and Bolton are quite superb. I see no reason we can't do a Blackpool, but we won't with Roy there. Who you have picked their respective managers - all better than Roy. We turned Ollie away when he applied.
I'd love to see Steve Fallon and John Beck at the club as we'd have a go - a la Sir Alf Ramsay. I think Paul Mariner would turn the club around - he is a legend: one of the greatest players I've ever seen and he has the coaching credentials. We'd do better with Paul than we could ever do with Roy.
Success in the Carling Cup has kept Roy in a job and I see no reason we can't win it as long as we don't freeze against Arsenal (and we can sneak on Sir Roger Osborne).
Why did we sack Jim Magilton who had us playing good football?
We had just beaten the squawkers - something we couldn't do with Roy.

Interesting examples that you've chosen.
Bolton got promoted as a last ditch gamble when £20m in debt. It seems peanuts now but back then a failure to get promoted would have possibly seen them go into freefall. Having performed a miracle to get in with a brilliant young manager they built and bought sensibly but, once they were in, the big money came to them.
Stoke have had years of investment so everything was in place bar the manager. When they got the manager they flew.
Blackpool are the same. Several years of infrastructure investment. They just needed the right manager to top it off.
I don't see that Ipswich have the infrastructure investment to make that leap. I'd put you in as more of a Watford than a Stoke etc. Therefore it's hard to see what a manager can do. Remember Ollie failed at Plymouth. Why? The investment built the stadium and then stalled. Mariner, who you seem to rate highly for no obvious reason, also failed there. Beck is just a laughable option. He left Histon. You should have been dragged to see the "football" they played. It was a disgrace to the word and it would be a disgrace to the Ipswich heritage too.
As for the players he's let go. Hmm. Stead has been in decline for years and the others are not exactly setting the world on fire right now.
You may not like him and you may think you could do better but really your problems lie elsewhere and until those are sorted you are doing well to stay in the Championship.

Maybe so, but was the team, overall, in any better a position! That's surely the key point. You can have a 30 goals a season striker but it means little if you finish mid-table beyond a few moments of joy.

Yes much better - we had more moments of Joy with Jim than Roy and Jim was a hero - hat trick against Bolton in play off semi-final.quote:Maybe so, but was the team, overall, in any better a position!
Paul Mariner would be my choice as he is an Ipswich man - if Plymouth had stuck with him they would have bounced straight back.
John Beck is just a great guy - ask Steve Claridge
John, of course, managed Cambridge United and I'd have loved to have seen them make the Premier League and they came so close. He beat the opposition through pure tactics - he was a genius.
Promotions
1989–90: Fourth Division play-off winner (promotion to Third Division) - Cambridge United
1990–91: Third Division champions (promotion to Second Division) - Cambridge United
1991–92: Fifth place (Play Off semi-finalists)
FA Cup
Quarter-finals (2): 1989–90, 1990–91
Football League Cup: Quarter-finals (1): 1992–93
Sure, John a great passer of the ball himself, didn't play total football, but it was all out attack - winning throws and corners and hurtling in to the box.
What I liked best was he told an angry centre forward walk away from trouble if you can - the player asked "who said that boss?" and Beck replied François-Marie Arouet also known as Voltaire who was a French philosopher. It was, of course, the great Kenny Rogers from Coward of the County, but Beck remarked later he knew his players would be too thick to realise.
Bring back cold water showers
ATB Rotf
PS - Preston at Deepdale followed by Leicester, Watford, Doncaster, Coventry and Nottingham Forest in the space of two weeks - no points, no Keane IMHO. I'm afraid simply overcoming Arsenal in the Carling and winning at Chelsea in the FA Cup will not be enough.

Regarding Cambridge United between 1989 and 1992, Beck inherited a very talented squad, the likes of which we'll never see again at the Abbey Stadium. Steve Claridge has said that United would have been promoted to the Premier League in 1992, had it not been for Beck's tactics.
Let's not lose sight of Becks's gamesmanship (eg turning off the heating in the visiting team's changing room on cold days, and vice versa on hot days, etc etc.). Also, Beck's second spell as United manager was not a success.
Beck for Portman Road? You're having a laugh.

As far as Beck is concerned I van only concur abd conclude that Ipswich fans haven't been paying attention to what happened after Cambridge. His exploits at Histon were embarrassing. As far as Mariner is concerned his credentials are what exactly? He played for the club. He came from the area. I was utterly bewildered when Plymouth appointed him and that was entirely borne out by his departure.
Magilton was interesting. Basically he knew how to play attractive football but he couldn't sort defences and paid for it. I refer back to my earlier comments. Let Kesne go by all means. I guarantee you'll slip into League One within three seasons. All the signs are there.

Paul is not from Ipswich - he is from Lancashire and played from Argyle before we nought him for a record £220,000 - £120,000 IIRC was for John Pedelty. Paul is still coaching at Plymouth AFAIK, but no longer manager.
He would get the players together as a team in a way that Mr K has failed to do. Keane was never right for Portman Road - we are a small club that has achieved more than any other club of similar size. We have often punched above our weight - Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan have all visited Portman Road and we've beaten them all. We have won major trophies at home and in Europe. We have been the source of England's two greatest managers - Sir Bobby and, of course, Sir Alf. It is a tradition that Paul understands and his visit to the ground last year was met with more applause than Keane has ever received.
I know we are not going to attract a Redknapp or Alladyce, but if Roy would kindly step aside - we could capture the PM and rise up the table. If not Paul then Terry Butcher if we could lure him home would be another great choice.

Whereas the Leicestershire half of my heritage means I'm passionate about Leicester Tigers, the same doesn't extend to the Foxes (unlike my cousin in Kasabian, but then he was born and grew up in Leicester).
Well done Town, in very chilly weather. And to think that, on the way home from collecting no.1 daughter from Leic Univ yesterday, we were listening to the BBC Leics pundits going on about the Foxes making use of Town's current slump, even with Portman Rd being a bogey ground for them.
However, one match doesn't make a season. So let's hope that Town can use this to draw a line in the sand - or snow.
