Naim Anonymous
Posted by: Dungassin on 11 December 2010
I think I must be addicted. Here I am not many months on from getting my nDAC (used with DVD5/HiLine/282/HiCAP/250.2/nSATs/nSUB), and I'm seriously debating upgrading it by getting an XPS2 or even (shock, horror) a 555PS.
Is this a sign of "Naim Abuse", and do we need to set up an organisation like Gamblers Anonymous for people like me?
p.s. Not sure whether I should have posted this here or in Padded Cell. Administrator please feel free to move it if you feel it should be elsewhere.

We are sick puppies and Naim should have professionals at the ready, 24/7 to look after our needs.

Dungassin,
There have been many such posts over the years on here and some quite worrying ones highlighting the state of a person's mental health.
If your statement is tongue in cheek, then fine, but if you seriously are getting addicted then I would suggest that you seriously have a good listen to what you have and plenty of other things before you start getting the upgraditis. Buy more music, this is a good way to stop reflecting and craving for new kit.
Some people have been quite silly living beyond their means, me included to some extent.
In the end it is up to them, but as a general rule, if you don't have the money then don't buy. Also get as much out of what you have before upgrading.
Of course if you see an XPS/XPS2 for a good price and it is not in need of immediate service then this is also worth considering
Regards
Mark

Hi Dave...They have; they call them their 'Staff', they are ready willing and able to make up whatever you desire at all times.

The way to avoid this condition is to buy Naim kit that cannot be upgraded: the UnitiQute is fantastic at letting you enjoy the music and not worrying about such matters......

Listen, without a doubt music is 'one' of the crucial aspects of my life. The realism that Naim equipment has always provided me stays with me all day. I remember the first time I heard "The Wind Cries Mary" by Hendrix, I mean really heard it. 24 hours later I would be climbing in Banff National Park and the song would be playing in my head. Or descending a glacier, songs playing in my mind. Naim has taken a great experience and made it that much better. I have a new Naim CDP coming and I can't stop thinking about it. Help!

Well having discussed your problem/situation we think that you have shown great restraint, a few months, well done.
Look at it like this, the sooner you get it the longer you will enjoy it, well at our age you have to think of things like that.

I thought that when I bought my first bit of Naim Kit many years ago ... a Nait (original).
The upgrade path is to forget that route and change completely to pre/power. I think I kept the Nait for 6 months before getting 32/HiCAP/250 (top of range back then)
Serioudly, I should have put this thread in padded cell. I'm going to ask the admin to move it, if that's OK with you.

Have you never wondered why this section of the forum is entitled "Naim Users"?

I know how you feel and think Naim gear should be available on prescription.

As I'm over 60, that would mean I could get it FREE!!!! (I wish)

If you do a forum search for "upgraditis" there are several hundred pages and if you read some of the threads, you will find some of them quite extreme. At least I did when I read them. Sometimes the old things spring to mind like a guy that blows his fortune by becoming a cocaine addict or alcoholic almost to the extent of selling everything just to have that perfect sound.
I do agree that Naim Anonymous should be formed so that these unfortunate people can be guided in order to avoid messing up their lives because of expensive HiFi.

The easiest remedy to this foley is to go to a Naim dealer and listen first to your favorite music with their top gear. Then substitute it with a very basic system of a Nait and a player which costs less than 8% of the expensive stuff and ask yourself honestly: Do I really enjoy the music that much less while hearing a little less? If the answer is 'yes' then you must be a restless sound engineer enslaved to toys and not a music lover. If the answer is 'no' you still have a chance of reaching a comfort zone where you can enjoy the music without worrying too much about the sound. Know where you stand.
Mark, we miss dearly your posts on the Music Room.

I should point out that I have NEVER bought a piece of equipment which I couldn't easily afford. I have one basic rule when auditioning "upgrades", and that is NEVER listen to something you can't afford. I agree there are some who truly get addicted - but I'm not one of them.

Yes, but the Naim "dealers" are only enabling the Naim "users". Each group of Naim users needing support should have a regular meeting rotating to different member's living spaces and commiserate on your feelings, but always keep it positive. Lots of vinyl and CD to be heard and libation all around. Maybe a little fiddling with wires and boxes but nothing more.
Oh, and there should be a support group for the mates of members so they get over becoming enablers. No guilt, keep it positive.

It's all moot now. SWMBO found out about my plans and vetoed them. She says I've already spent £7K on Hifi upgrades/servicing this year and said I'm not allowed to spend any more until at least next summer, so that's my lot. .... sigh ...

Is possible that your wife is a forum member
I plan to start a new thread in HiFi Corner called "Naim conspiracy theories"

Don't think so. It was my youngest daughter who ratted me out.
I'd post to your suggested thread.

This is where you investigate the concept of box swapping - you keep the profile of the kit approximately the same and you enjoy the improvement in the sound. Done correctly - other people in the house will never suspect that you have moved from CDS2 etc to a 555 along with a 552 and a 500.
Posted on: 15 December 2010 by Dungassin
Actually, that's not a problem. SWMBO says the study is my room, and so I have to clean it myself. That dates from the time (before I retired) we had a row after she tidied my desk and shuffled all the slides I was sorting out for a lecture. Hence, she wouldn't really notice an extra box. However, she would if it was in the living room (where the Olive system resides). The same rule about me cleaning it applies to the Olive system - ever since she trashed my original Asak cartridge while dusting the LP12.
No, we have a joint bank account (and have had since the day we married), so she can always see what I've been spending.
No big deal. I've worked out that the 2.5% VAT rise will only add about £125 to the cost of a 555PS

£7000 ought to be enough to kit a fellow out in replay equipment for life!
I am surprised that she would allow you ever to spend another penny on it.
She has my total sympathy ...
Have a merry Christmas. George

Ah, but I've got deep pockets. It's my hobby (listening to music on really good equipment). I don't drink/smoke/use mind-altering drugs, and the only strange woman I run around with is my wife.
And a merry non-denominational Winter Solstice to you too! (just me being PC - I am an atheist, after all!)
