Naim Anonymous

Posted by: Dungassin on 11 December 2010

I think I must be addicted. Here I am not many months on from getting my nDAC (used with DVD5/HiLine/282/HiCAP/250.2/nSATs/nSUB), and I'm seriously debating upgrading it by getting an XPS2 or even (shock, horror) a 555PS.

Is this a sign of "Naim Abuse", and do we need to set up an organisation like Gamblers Anonymous for people like me? Winker

p.s. Not sure whether I should have posted this here or in Padded Cell. Administrator please feel free to move it if you feel it should be elsewhere.

So you have nothing to complain about really.

My point was that perhaps you do complain too much really.

If you want to spend £7000 a month on replay, then I could not care less, but please don't try to make us feel sorry for you given that your obviously lovely wife sees it otherwise, or else I'll side with her every time!

Sounds like a load of self pity to me!

And I wish you an Abstemious New Year as well! George

IMO knobby comments to make. None of has the right to comment on how someone else chooses to spend their "hard earned", or how their other half deals with it.

Is likely to either come across as patronising or jealousy.

Somehow £7k spent this year got escalated to £7k per month.

Anyway, more power to those that want to upgrade. Just planning my next several thousand pound upgrade Smile

In spite of the various and devious strategies I have deployed to feed my Naim upgrade habit my wife has found me out. I am now hamstrung by a promise forced out of me that I will no longer spend on "changing and fiddling" with our Naim system. I am ordered to be happy with what we have.

Which is a pity as I would really really like a CD555.

Maybe if I just lie low for a while ......

I have suffered a lifetime of Hifi Fiddleitis & for more years than I can remember have been undergoing treatment in various institutions & rest homes.
A few years ago my consultant recommended a course of Naim; the thinking was that once I had been accepted the Naim Ethos the compulsion would subside to a controllable level. The treatment initially worked well and greatly helped by the distraction of working & travelling internationally.
It culminated with a final cold turkey session of retirement & reducing old multiple olive coloured box count down to new black & very musical with superior ..... sorry I must remember not to get too excited & breath properly ..... Supernait & CDX2.

I have now learned to live with the condition, but it has now become complicated by a trend towards sub-defuse & secrecy.
My consultant has told me it is a side effect that happens with Naim & its called Compulsive Upgrade Syndrome & at this time a cure is not known.
I am furtunate to have a very understanding & supportive family & my long suffering wife has mostly gone along with it. She fully agrees the new speakers were definitely needed to match the new room decore & her chosen hi-end furniture. The same goes for the soon to be delivered self designed bespoke equipment rack.

The new rack will need a new power connection block and she agrees that this must be designed with more outlets than actually needed & must fit perfectly under the self designed bespoke equipment rack - sorry, must calm down - so specialist cables & parts were ordered & I am pleased to say that most of yesterday were taken up with this very successful therapy.

I have recently discovered that as FM switch off has been "cancelled" the perfectly good Arcam T32 would be so much better if it was a NAT-02.

The latest is I have borrowed a HiCap in the belief that the improvement would be so good she cannot help but agree.
............ err .......... sorry did I say borrowed.

As for how much anyone spends on replay, I could not care less if a person spends £7000 in a lifetime, month, or year!

So you have entirely missed the thrust of my point and conflated, out of contexts, two different statements. I would not go so far as to call it knobby, but very silly seems reasonable to me.

But please do not ask me to sympathise when a wife or husband points out that sometimes things can go too far [for them] ...

With an appropriate end-of-year, beat-the-VAT-rise
discount, obviously!

Not going to quote your post(s) George, but ...

I am not really moaning. I started off this thread as a hopefully light-hearted bit of self-parody. SWMBO actually has no problem at all with me spending money on my hifi system(s), but she quite rightly says that it's probably better if I don't do it "all in one go". I actually enjoy listening to the intermediate stages. If £7k sounds like a lot (it is), just bear in mind that would just about buy the 282/HiCAP/250 which I use hooked into my AV system. Then you have to add source/speakers/interconnects. One of the pleasures of each upgrade has been to rediscover various items of my collection.

Others spend their money on cars, boats, round the world cruises, etc. When I realised that I could actually afford the Ferrari I used to lust after, I discovered that I didn't really want one. Music is one of the great loves of my life. The others are my wife and family. In spite of "moaning" about her, it's all pretty light-hearted most of the time.

After all, if you can't have a good moan for the sake of it, what's life all about? Let's hear it for the Meldrews amongst us! Smile

As to what we actually do with my excess income ... well, we spend it on improving our house, holidays, hifi, grandkids, favourite charities etc etc. Anything left over we usually split between our 2 children at the end of the year. After all, they might as well have it now rather than when I and the missus expire. No point in just saving it all up so that the taxman can take vast chunks of it in death duties.

George, old fellow, why do you do it?!
Posted on: 17 December 2010 by George Fredrik
Dear Svetty,

Sometimes it is hard to avoid testing the waters! Dungassin replied to me saying that his point was in the line of humour - a point that I had entirely missed.

I am not really sure that humour always manages the transition of the printed word oresented on a computer screen ...

I may be showing my lack of understanding of the latest in hi-fi technology here Dungassin, but what's the music source in your system?
Posted on: 17 December 2010 by Dungassin
Actually I have 2 systems. I have copied and updated the following from my profile :

System 1 : LP12/Lingo/Ekos/Dynavector Te Kaitura, Naim CDS (with CDPS), Nakamichi CR7, AIWA HDS1 DAT, Denon 1500 CDR, Naim 52 (with 52PS), Prefix, 135 times 4, NAXO/Hicap, Active SBLs, NACA5

System 2 : Oppo BDP 83SE, Naim DVD5, AV2, DCI, nDAC, HiLine, NAC282/Hicap, NAP250.2/200/145, Rega Radio, Sony 710 and 860 DVD Recorders, Sony 20W2000 TV, Naim n-System, PS2, Wii, Xbox, Xbox360, Stax 2050II earphones, NACA5

The system I was thinking of adding to was System 2. So I suppose you could say my music source there is DVD5/nDAC, although I also use my Oppo for music DVDs, DVD-A, and SACD, and also occasionally use one of the freeview DVD recorders as a Radio source (but never for serious listening).

I believe the logical upgrade to System 2 music source would be an XPS2 or 555PS to power the nDAC. Hope that is the info you require.

Why 2 systems? Well, that's another story. Smile

Seriously, I always believed that a top NAIM system could do wonders to a married life and bring sheer happiness to the wife:

"Honey, I am selling my 500/552. Now we can get your dream kitchen and renovate the bathrooms"

"Sweet heart, I am getting rid of my 555 player so we can finally take our fifth honeymoon we were dreaming about for so long in Majorca".

And on a smaller scale:

"Imelda my love, I am pawning the Hi-Line and all my Power-Lines so you can buy yourself another couple pairs of shoes"...

Agreed, as much as I like Italian red cars, the engine is way too loud on those Ferrari. This is why personally I bought a Fiat Uno instead.

Nah. Basically I just grew up, and realised that getting in and out of one would be awkward. Perfectly happy with my diesel Volvo S60. Big Grin

Absolutely with you on that one: no point buying a car if it does not have enough legroom.

No, it's because sports cars are usually very low to the ground, and getting in and out becomes a problem as you get older. Smile
