How about a multi-channel DAC then?

Just wishing.

Naim could build on their AV2 / DAC expertise. Create a AV2 like box with not only SPDIF but in addition HDMI in.

Strip the audio out of the HDMI input ( typically from someone's DVD/Blu-Ray player) and process thru' the multichannel DAC to a set of Analog outs as per existing in the AV2

There are a lot of folks that use stereo mix down so even working with a high quality stereo pair would be nice. Icing on the cake would be 7.1 channel analog out from HD Audio with multichannel volume control.

The box wouldn't need to do format decoding for HDMI. The user can do that in their DVD/Bluray player so not a heavy outlay on licencing fees. Just better analog audio than a dvd/bluray player can do

If you could easily have 3 spdif out of a BR player for 5.1 I would have 3 DAC's tomorrow. But unfortunately you can't.....

Apart from the meridian HD621 there is very little available to porperly split HDMI from the picture. The HD621 then does not send out as spdif...

Plus how will you deal with speaker settings and levels using the AV2 in analogue in mode without getting into a mess.

I would love naim to do a great BR player that processes distances, levels and outputs 3 spdif for audio and picture by HDMI. They could then have a 6 channel DAC and then you have a start and an upgrade path

Or even a basic HDMI out for both (for those using HDMI processors) and 3 spdif for those wanting the best analogue solution.

I think complexity and HDMI licencing laws scupper this Confused

I must be thick becaus as soon as I read this sort of stuff my brian seams to shut down. What does all this mean?

I wouldn't waste my time on Blu-ray hardware, if I was a small specialist manufacturer - but an HDMI-based AV processor would be quite nice.

With that, one could easily design a UPnP video streamer - and, given that Blu-ray is data-compressed to begin with, this might be a fantastic opportunity to really develop a consumer-grade streaming infrastructure for audio and video around the home.

Just my two cents, anyway....

If you want HD audio you have two options, process in the player and have analogue out from the player (6 channels) or you connect to a HDMI HD processor and connect via HDMI. So no way to do anything else other than buy a BR player that processes HD Audio and use your AV2 as a 6 channel pass through pre or swap the AV2 for a HD processor and connect via (The jitter prone) HDMI

Great discription as you make sense. As luck would have it I have a Blueray and AV2 so am set up for this without realising it.

I have a visit at Naim booked for the 20th Sept so hopeing to learn more about the digital side of audio whilst I'm there.

Thanks for your help.
