Covers

Sometimes I like to sniff around on youtube for clips of music and sometimes I find something new I like that I have never heard of before - I found EST like that.
Sometimes I search for a given favourite and note how many covers are available - sometimes I play some of these covers and they are dire beyond words but sometimes I find a gem. Not saying its better than the original or even that it is as good as the original but it is a refreshing alternative.
here is one I like:

I have really enjoyed listening to Mojo's Neil Young tribute 'Harvest Revisited' covers CD.
There are only two tracks I positively don't like (which I won't mention in order not to prejudice anyone else, or cause an argument!) but many of the others are played sensitively, with a fair degree of faithfulness to the original, but also a slight twist. The result (for me) is being able to listen to music I've loved for over 30 years and get something new out of it, particularly the sheer beauty of NY's songs.

Maybe not my favourite covers but some that I have discovered recently and I feel others would like too
- Kate Walsh´s Peppermint Radio. I think the whole CD is outstanding, can not really pick a favourite.
- Herbie Hancock´s The Imagine Project. Most of the songs are quite ok but the real highlight for me is Bob Dylan´s The times they are a-changing cover with great vocals by Lisa Hannigan
- Johnny Cash`s cover of We´ll meet again (the song at the end of Dr. Strangelove) in American IV: Man comes around.

I don't know why but I always tend to bin these freebie things that come with the mags. I bought Mojo this month, so based on this recommendation will make a point of giving it a listen as opposed to it ending up in the bin.

SARA ISAKSSON & REBECKA TÖRNQVIST recorded an album of Steely Dan covers a few years ago - two singers and two pianos. Hearing the songs stripped to their bare bones made me appreciate them even more:

Duran Duran covering Perfect Day (Lou Reed) & Watching the Detectives (Elvis Costello) are both very good an an album called Thank You.
To be fair the rest of the album is poor but these two tracks stood out for me....

Todd Rundgren, Joe Jackson and Ethel (Swedish ? Folk Quartet) playing “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”
I saw then play this live, very impressive and different.

I genuinely preferred this spoof to the original by an obnoxious pretentious band I couldn't stand.

Have you heard Ryan Adams version? I think it is much better than the original.

I rather enjoyed the Paul Anka version. Though prefer this by him:

My favourite cover of Randy Newmans I think it’s going to rain today. Not quite as good as the original, but a lot better than most.
