Covers

Sometimes I search for a given favourite and note how many covers are available - sometimes I play some of these covers and they are dire beyond words but sometimes I find a gem. Not saying its better than the original or even that it is as good as the original but it is a refreshing alternative.
here is one I like:
Please post your own cover favourites
Masters of Progressive Rock and Covers - Dream Theater:
Please know it's not my intent to take this thread astray. Just want to make note of a couple Youtube clips that are (at least to me) quite moving, and likely never noticed but by accident.
1. Harry Nilsson rehearsing 'Without her'. Just his voice, guitar and a great recording. And no, sorry, it's not a cover.
2. Nina Simone's 'I loves you Porgy'. Guess anyone doing this besides George and Ira are doing a cover.
Tons out there, but these are the one's I just can't stop enjoying.
Brad Mehldau Trio - Holland by Sufjan Stevens
Drives the wife crazy when I play this one. Makes me love it all the more.
Jennifer Warne's cover of Billy Joel's And So It Goes
I don't think that I have EVER seen a cover thread in any forum that does *not* mention Hendrix 'All Along the Watchtower'.
But artistically he did not cover it. Rather he uncovered it, peeling the cheap carpeted layer off it to reveal the beautiful hardwood core.
There's an idea...another thread about 'uncovers' where the versions are not only superior to the originals, but stylistically redefine it too.
I have to mention the Cowboy Junkies cover of "Sweet Jane."
Also, since we are likely all audiophiles here, I would be remiss in not mentioning Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat album, which is comprised entirely of Leonard Cohen covers (although he does sing along on a few so are they still covers?).
The Stranglers' version or Walk On By and probably one of the best covers of all time, Johnny Cash - Hurt.

Every copy of this in the whole world should be impounded and melted down. Every video of it should be wiped and it's very existence erased from the history of the universe.
In case you hadn't guessed, I don't like it.

Sinead O'Connor 'Nothing Compares To You' is a phenomenal cover of what was otherwise a fairly ordinary song. G

It's an amazing performance. I haven't heard the original, I didn't realize until I googled this that Prince wrote this song.
When The Levee Breaks - Great Cover by LZ!
Love it or hate it, Gary Jules uncovering Tears for Fears 'Mad World' has to have mention.
But artistically [Jimi] did not cover [All Along the Watchtower]. Rather he uncovered it, peeling the cheap carpeted layer off it to reveal the beautiful hardwood core.
While no one can deny the magnificence of Jimi's rendition, I wouldn't agree that Dylan's original has any cheap carpeted layer on it, not by a long shot.
I'm rather partial to the Balanescu Quartet's cover of Kraftwerks' "The Model"...
Love the note-for-note horn solo of Page's lead...
Too bad this version of Frank's band had so much internal strife, such that when he found out about it, he cancelled the rest of the tour. (Which turned out to be the last he ever did.)
Brilliant cover album, listen to this more than the original in the last few years. Easy Star All-Stars also did another one..Dubber Side of The Moon. They have also done cover albums of Ok Computer,Sgt Pepper and recently Thriller.
In a similar vein, Little Roy has an excellent album Battle For Seattle a collection of 10 Nirvana songs.
Agreed.

Juliette Lewis, dancing in the desert to the CJ version in Natural Born Killers was neat.
