Covers

Sometimes I search for a given favourite and note how many covers are available - sometimes I play some of these covers and they are dire beyond words but sometimes I find a gem. Not saying its better than the original or even that it is as good as the original but it is a refreshing alternative.
here is one I like:
Please post your own cover favourites
I don't think that I have EVER seen a cover thread in any forum that does *not* mention Hendrix 'All Along the Watchtower'.
But artistically he did not cover it. Rather he uncovered it, peeling the cheap carpeted layer off it to reveal the beautiful hardwood core.
There's an idea...another thread about 'uncovers' where the versions are not only superior to the originals, but stylistically redefine it too.
And along the same vein I must mention Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Little Wing. In all sincerity his rendition leaves the original (Mr. Hendrix) in the dust. If anyone has never heard this than they owe it to themselves to search it out. The album "The Sky Is Crying" is Audiophile quality - forget sourcing the vinyl as it goes for several hundred dollars - the CD is readily available and equally impressive. The title track, an Albert King tune, also surpasses the original. Albert was Stevie's idol and the master was in awe of the student.

Peter Gabriel's cover of Listening Wind really got it's hooks in me in a way that the Talking Heads original didn't quite manage.
Totally agree. Very poweful song, Richard.

Saw SRV and Albert King on a PBS show last night, amazing hearing the two of them jam together!

I like that one too. Indeed, Peter Gabriel's recent two albums bear mention in general as interesting covers.
I do like the Talking Heads original though.
Dave - I recently picked up this edition of what I believe is the same show you watched; come with a CD & DVD at a nice price:
(The Russian is superimposed from the site where I got the image.)
And back on topic, the Jerry Garcia band does a terrific rendition of "Dear Prudence" live on their 1991 album. (Also has nice renditions of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", and "Tangled Up in Blue" as well.)
And as long as I mentioned a Dylan cover, the Stones do a real nice job on Stripped with their version (appropriately enough) of "Like A Rolling Stone".

Yes, saw some of this on public TV ... really terrific.
