Please recommend me some Black Sabbath

Posted by: GaryP on 20 December 2010

Hi,

I bought Black Sabbath's Paranoid a few weeks ago. I had forgotten just how good it was/is. I thought my heavy metal days were over 30 years ago but perhaps not!

Last weekend I bought Rainbow Rising which is generally agreed was perhaps their finest effort, but I was left a little disappointed.

I think I prefer the simple more raw, conceptual and haunting themes of Sabbath.

So back to more Sabbath for the time being, but where to next? Stay pre Dio I suspect. Any recommendations?

Or is Motorhead my next move, back to music I long ago thought I would never listen to again Smile

Thanks
Gary

Down to Earth is my favourite Rainbow elpee. I prefer Rainbow to Black Sabbath, but then I am a great Deep Purple fan and love the music of Blackmore's Night.

However, I still like Sabbath - agree MOR is their best, but would suggest the first 4 records as all representing the best of BS. Sabbath without Oz just don't work for me.

Mine too - and the track that was the B side to All Night Long - Weiss Heim, is a stunner.

So are we saying the best albums (not in any particular order) are

Black Sabbath
Paranoid
Masters of Reality
Vol4

Are these the first four albums? With Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage the 5th and 6th (not necessarily in that order)

And after that they went downhill with Ozzy's departure

You have to try Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules too though.

Their first album is magnificent and easily the best one.

You won't go wrong with that one.

Gary,
Those first four are all excellent. At the time Masters of Reality was my favourite but in recent years the first one and Paranoid have really grown on me.
I probably marginally preferred Deep Purple and you should try In Rock and Machine Head, both superb examples of virtuoso heavy rock.

If you want some current but stunning Sabbath inspired rock then this is a superb record

Most Cathedral albums are 6/10 or 7/10 with odd tracks that shine, but on their latest album they have taken extra care and time over the songs and it has been well worth the wait - I'd say 8/10 or perhaps 9/10 for this one.

First 10 albums !

8 Ozzy ones, and the 2 Dio classics. People seem to pass on the last 2 Ozzy albums, but they still contain some classic songs 'Dirty women' 'R'n'R doctor' 'Never Say Die'. And unless you don't like Dio's voice (!!) both Heaven and Hell, and Mod Rules are top 100 rock albums in anyones chart.

Something more modern? Try 'Trouble' if you can find any of the albums. Sabbath with a touch of Plant vocals and some Beatles harmony's/arrangements.

Another vote for the 1970 debut Black Sabbath album.

1. Black Sabbath
2. The Wizard
3. Behind The Wall Of Sleep
4. N.I.B.
5. Evil Woman, Don't Play Your Games With Me
6. Sleeping Village
7. Warning

Can anyone please tell me what N.I.B stands for ?

Always puzzled me that

Nativity In Black

Though Geezer denied this, it is the name given to a Sabbath bootleg.

A bit like FAB in Thunderbirds didn't stand for anything, whereas SIG in Captain Scarlet stood for Spectrum Is Green.

'Paranoid' is essential ... You already have that so another vote for the debut album 'Black Sabbath'

Nobody's mentioned Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, which I think was their 5th and is one of their 5 best (imho).

Or you could "cheat" and have a selected fix from their first half a dozen albums with.....
