Wireless control (iPad, iPod, Mac) for UnitiQute or Uniti
Posted by: Binkey M. on 27 April 2010
Hi! My first post and I apologize if this topic has already been covered (33pages of info-yikes).I am looking to purchase a Naim Uniti or UnitiQute but am concerned about the remote supplied. Looks fine for set-up and volume control but not like the remote used for the Sonos etc. Right now I am using a MacBook Pro and a cheap Airport Express connected to the RCA inputs of my Krell preamp. It works fine but this is more experimentation with digital audio on my part. The Linn DS streamers are exactly what I am looking for except....they are not "Naim" products LOL. Sorry, have to have the black box and the green glows-in-the-dark logo
Is there an app for the Uniti and UnitiQute that will allow me to control this device (browse playlists, select songs, and control volume from my laptop or iPad)? This way I never have to leave my couch (that is the goal). I know they have just released an app for the HDX for $40 USD(I think that is the price) on the iTunes store here in the U.S. But doesn't look like anything yet for the Qute
Sorry for the long-winded post! Any info will really be appreciated TKS!

Currently there is a (third party) app called Plug Player which will control music selection on NaimUniti and UnitiQute (or any UPnP device). Some people report it work fine, others find it limited and buggy but it only a few dollars IIRC. Songbook and other apps are also available for UPnP control.
Naim have announced there will be an app sometime in the next couple of months to specifically control the NaimUniti and UnitiQute.

Thanks Eloise for the super-fast reply. Totally answers my questions. I hope the app will be as well thought out as the HDX app. If the higher-ups at Naim here this...I hope they add a volume-control to the app as well. I hear this is also lacking in the HDX app. Now, I am really looking forward to my first Naim gear. I jumped ship at Krell when they changed ownership and started making gear in China. It is nice to see Naim committed to making gear in England still...I hope they keep it that way. Nothing against China....but at this price range I expect more.

Oh, speaking about remotes....If anyone has a hi-rez photo of the standard Uniti remote I would really appreciate a shot of the back cover. Have not found any photos online or on the Naim site. Obviously not too many people care about the back of the remote! I'm asking because the machined aluminum remote for my Krell is just awfully designed. Removing the batteries is just impossible (for real). I would purchase the Naim "upgrade remote" (the one used for the 555) for volume control, but I think $500 is a bit overkill on a $3-$5,000 stereo?? And yes, you guessed it...no local dealer in my area (about a 4 hour drive). So I would like to get my "research" done online before the drive. Thanks again!!!

The Uniti remote is really great - easily the best I have used on any system. It has a really nice heft and balance and feels good in the hand.
The battery department is easily accessible - have no worries.

Sounds great John. Thanks for the info. Really one of the last bits of info I needed before making the jump. Also, wanted to add re: new app for the Unit I read elsewhere on this site (June release)? Anyway, some have complained that the HDX app doesn't work well with the new iPad. I am not sure if this is a problem (won't keep me from buying), however, it would be really nice if Naim would include with all of their networked audio products a CD-ROM that would allow control through either a PC or Mac (I've been using OS-X Snow Leopard for the past 6 months and love it). Also forgot to ask if there is a way to use iTunes with their streamers? I'm not sure if Linn allows use of iTunes (I've heard that they recommend MediaMonkey). I've tried Media Monkey and honestly, other than the additional support for FLAC files, I actually prefer iTunes.

You are not the only one.
I found media monkey rather inconvenient, and offering exactly no sound quality advantages as well as having the default of eliding tracks rather than properly making gapless replay.
Very frustrating piece of software, which in my view does not diserve recommendation.
