Genre

Why does iTunes classify Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow Stranger In Us All as Electronica/Dance.

You can't get more Rock than Ritchie.

I know some folk on here get very touchy about genre. Anybody else noticed any odd categories? Alice Cooper under female country and western singers?

I have had a few of my more challenging discs come out in a new genre to me called "unclassifiable".

I have seen Michael Nyman classified as 'techno' in a record shop, which does kind of make sense.

I don't bother with the 'genre' column in itunes any more as i've never really paid attention to it.

Genre can be useful when looking for more artists of the same ilk on sites like Amazon, but at the end of the day im far more concerned about whether i like what i listen to rather than which box it has been shoehorned into.

Timmy Mallet under AOR anyone?

Mettalica under Ambient?

Slade under 'Shoegazing'?

Cowboy Junkies under 'Death metal'?

Joy Division under 'Happy Hardcore'?

Joni Mitchell under 'Grime'?

Paper Lace under 'New Romantic'?

Any recommendations - I'm not familiar with Mr Mallet's more recent work.

How about "Timmy Mallett under concrete".

A much more satisfactory solution I feel...
