Torlyte

Does anyone have any experience with Russ Andrews' Torlyte turntable stand, especially in conjunction with a sprung turntable (I am using a Voyd Reference)? Any feedback is appreciated.

I have frequented this forum for around about a year now and I think I can safely say that I have never, not once, heard anybody discuss the virtues of Torlyte (toilet?)

Why this is I have no idea.

Maybe the stuff is so good that people who own it don't feel the need to rant and rave and would rather keep it a best kept secret. Dunno. Maybe it's just crap - hence the name?

Odd one.

...but on a trip to the lake district last Christmas, myself and my girlfriend accidentally-on-purpose ended up at the RA showroom, where I heard a very nice sounding chrome-bumpered Naim system on a Torlyte stand.

However, it looked pretty odd.

Have you tried a Mana stand for your turntable? Now *that* is a stand which *REALLY* improves most anything you sit on it (hifi, TV, cactii, cheap plonk, neighbours cat... ;-)

John,

I actually had the Voyd on a Mana stand and it sounded awful. This may partially be due to the fact that the Voyd is supported by four metal cones, which is probably not the best interface with the Mana's glass shelf. I've actually owned quite a bit of Mana that I am slowly selling off. I've decided that it's "sound" is not right for me.

I have been informed that Voyd used to make a stand especially for the Voyd that is no longer available, but that the Torlyte is the next best thing.

Based upon preliminary reports, I will probably buy the Naim Fraim for my electronics (saw and heard at the Stereophile show and they are sweet), but face the same problem with the Voyd (i.e. glass shelf).

I bought an original one of these sometime in January 1986. Prior to that I was using an original Sound Org stand. The t/t I had at the time was the Source/Zeta/Karma. There was no doubt that the Torlyte sounded VERY different to the SO table and allowing the Source t/t to perform to a higher standard in every respect. I recall a significantly cleaner, tuneful and more dynamic sound. Then one day while moving I slammed the car drunk shut on the partially protruding Torlyte stand ending its illustrious career. Current Torlyte stands look and probably sound much different to the originals.
