Stylus cleaners

Posted by: Mekon on 22 April 2003

I've just had a new cart fitted (DV 10X5), and want to keep it clean, but don't fancy shelling out £70 on Epay for an AT-637. I've seen mention of the Lyra liquid & brush, and some green Linn material. My dealer recommended the Russ Andrews product.

Other than the AT-637, are they all much of a muchness, or is there a particularly good one? Are there any to avoid, and are there any that aren't suitable for the Dynavector?

What you really need is a soft bristle brush for routine removal of surface dust and lint etc., plus a short stiff bristle brush for removal of the more stubborn caked-on detritus which accumulates over time.

A small soft artists paintbrush is ideal for the former task. For the latter I find the Disc Doctor product very effective. It can be used dry or with the supplied fluid. Available here and elsewhere.

Interesting - it appears from the photo that the AC014 brush is the same as the one supplied with the Disc Doctor product!

Lyra's SPT is the best! Gets rid of gunk and is OK with Dynavectors. The brush it comes with is also excellent.

Hi there
I use an Onzow Zerodust and it works really well - no problem with Dynavectors. Just in case you have not heard of it, it is some slightly sticky stuff into which you lower your cartridge/stylus and then lift up. The sticky stuff holds the dirt and leaves you with a clean stylus. You can clean the sticky stuff under running water.
Available from hififorsale.com - I am not connected to them!
Cheers

Second that - works nice on my NAD533 (in a bedroom system).

I also use that Discwasher brush/fluid set (cost about a tenner in 1999) on my P3 in the main rig - I usually use it fluidless. Works possibly better than the Onzo stuff, but it's way more scary to use and the cartridge is more vunerable.
