I put in a CD to rip and the drive just disappeared from the Disc Utility. The disc is stuck in there. Re-booting did nothing.
Any ideas? A trip to the store?

Hold down the left hand mouse button whilst starting it up.
Otherwise there should be a little pin hole on one side of the slot, cannot remember which.
Some copy protected DVDs can really f* a mac up, however the holding in mouse button thing usually works.
If not, then yes the dvd drive has gone south.

It eventually (overnight) recovered and actually finished the rip. All is well again. The drive is back. It was a japanese import disc and may well have been a bit odd. I have subsequently ripped a few discs with no problems.
