HDX network storage - quality
Posted by: BLee on 17 December 2009
Apologies to ask this question as I have searched and found it discussed many times, but reading the posts has only left me more confused than I was before. Really sorry to ask, but I have an HDX which is going to be full very soon. I understand that I can add network storage and that the HDX will be able to pick it up and play it. What I currently don't understand is this...when I have added the storage, do I rip in the HDX and it then transfers the content to the new storage, or do I have to manually move what is currently on the HDX to the new storage thus creating space on the HDX to add more content? Given Naim's claims on ripping (which to my untutored ears sound more than plausible), I would only want to rip via the HDX. Will be sincerely grateful for any guidance on this, and apologies again for raising something which has been discussed many times before.

You need to wait for the software update to rip from the hdx to nas.
In the mean time use something like foobar or XLD to rip music on your computer to the nas which the HDX can then pick up.
As foobar and XLD rip with error correction and lossless it will be as good as HDX rips.

If you're at all worried about rips, foobar and dbpoweramp both have components that will compare the audio portions of two files, so you could investigate whether HDX rips are the same as foobar/dbpoweramp/XLD rips. And since dbpoweramp and XLD verify their rips against accuraterip, you have another source of security (or insecurity).

Ah, great, very clear - thanks very much garyi and likesmusic - much appreciated.

It will allow you to rip either to the local store and spill over to the external storage OR rip directly to external storage.
The store(s) priority can be changed accordingly via the Desktop Client or GUI's
The music can be moved around between stores also via the DTC/GUI's

Thanks AV@naim - ordered the storage today and will experiment with the ripping suggested above until the new software is available.

I would not use Foobar to rip when you can use EAC.
Foobar is a great converter and possibly the finest and most powerful player. But it is new to accurate ripping. I dont know if you correct the drive offset. And does it now have secure-mode ripping?
I would liken Foobar ripping to iTunes. At least in the past, like iTunes, Foobar only had burst-mode ripping, without cue, log, or offset correction. Maybe things have changed.
In any case, if you dont have an HDX, do yourself a favor and do a "Proper" rip with EAC (PC) or XLD (Mac) to FLAC with nice tags. If you want WAVs for some reason later down the road, you can convert to WAV anytime you want.

If you've a pc, have a look at dppoweramp too. imo it is much easier to use than EAC, and also offers rips corrected for drive offset and verified against the accuraterip database. Lots of other fancy features if you want them too - ripping to multiple formats, verifying rips from other rippers (like the HDX)..

Thanks for the additional info. Great forum, much appreciated. I think my biggest challenge now is making sure I am at home when the courier arrives with the new storage.
