Desktop client does not find my hdx
Posted by: Tomas Hassler on 05 April 2009
Hi,
I cannot connect to my hdx from the desktop client (running under windows xp).
The naim set ip tool works fine. So does the webclient.
Any hints what I am doing wrong here?

Tomas,
This has happened to me before.
Are you using DHCP or static IP adresses for your HDX? You should use static IP.
You may have to run the set-up IP tool again to find your HDX on the network and change your settings if your using DHCP.

Thanks for your ideas.
Now running as Administrator and with fixed ip.
Still no luck with connecting.
Any more hits?
Is there any way to start desktop client with an ip address?
What protocol for service discovery is the hdx -desktop client using?

The HDX requires 2 separate IP addresses. One for the front panel and one for the rear internet connection. Your DTC should be finding the same web address as your IPUI which is listed in system settings.
When you open the DTC in the bottom right it should have your HDX serial number and the web address in parentheses next to it.
When your DTC doesn't open does it giv eyou a countdown while it seraches for the device and then connect?

Are you using a firewall product that could be blocking the traffic ?
Have a look at what IP address the HDX is using (front panel, system, system staus - might look like 192.168.1.15) and see if you can ping that address from a command line on your PC.
On Windows XP - Start, Run, type the word CMD and then OK..now type the following "ping 192.168.1.15" or what ever the IP address of your HDX is.
If you get a "Request Timed out" then your PC can't communicate with the HDX.
Can your HDX connect to the internet via your router (to get album info, etc) ?

I can ping and i can use the web ui http://192.168.1.50/.
The ip address of the hxd is 192.168.1.50 and the ip address of the windows xp client is 192.168.1.104
Both the hdx and the pc is connected to one port each in netgear gigabit switch.

What happens when you go to open the DTC?
Does it just not connect and leaves you with a red dot in the right hand corner?

Thats a heck of void in IP addresses, I presume you have a lot of device, or have DHCP set in a really high range or...

Typically Tomas you set your static IP adresses for the HDX outside of your DHCP window.
So if you use DHCP from 198.162.1.1--198.162.1.100 for example then you should set your static IPs for the HDX above 100.
