DVD5 : Any problems outputing DVI
Posted by: PatG on 13 December 2005
Hello
Has anyone had problems outputing DVI signals from a DVD5.
My new DVD5 failed to play a DVI signal into my new Sim2 20H projector (connected using a QED DVI to HDMI cable) although a s-video cable connection produced an image.
The DVD5 went back to NAIM who found a fault with the DVD5 and replaced it with a new unit.
Now when I connect it to the Sim2, again no image under HDMI connection. The Sim2 is now going back to the manufacter.
I am finding it hard to believe that both units were defective.
Any ideas?

I often have the same problem with my dvd5 connected to a sim 2 ht300e.
Turning off the dvd5 and then turning on the dvi output starts to work.
I'm not sure it's normal.

Nope, not had a problem and tried the DVD5 with Pioneer plasma and Sharp projector. I will have to give it a go through the Sim2's we have.

Had a few problems, but mainly due to turning on and off a few of the video outputs and it not quite doing what I thought it would. I found that I got a picture when in the DVD5 menu, but as soon as I went to play a film it turned off the outputs I'd switched off, plus a few others! I think it's due to some of them sharing the same board or something.

Hi Patrick,
I talked at length to Adam at Naim about this problem, and we are baffled too. We know your SIM2 and our Demo DVD5 are compatible because we were careful enough to check this before you bought the unit, and we know your dvd5 did fail at some point, but the new dvd5 we sent definitely works with both our demo projectors (JVC HX-1s) via the hdmi - dvi lead which we supplied. We also know your SIM2 now does not work when connected to a Unidisk 1.1. I think we'll only have an answer when you get the SIM2 back. It is astonishing that both units could have failed unless the failure in one caused the failure in the other somehow. Every time I've connected a dvd5 to anything else with a DVI or hdmi input, it bursts into life immediately. I have one dvd player which will only talk to the projector if you turn the latter on first!
One final note, apparently SIM2 use the DVD5 at all their demonstrations (exhibitions etc) so I doubt there would be any compatibility issues.
Cheers
Alan.

Hi Simon
I believe the DVD5 will ouptput on all video connections when in MENU mode but will switch off the ones so chosen when in play mode (i.e you need to switch them back on in the set up menu)
Alan, thanks for the update. I have sent the Sim2 back to the manufacturer (with the DVI to HDMI cable) and will await developments.

I've had a similar problem when connecting the DVD5 to a new Mitsubishi 1080p DLP TV. I do not get a picture when connecting via DVI (using a DVI to HDMI converter cable) although I do get a picture using either the S-Video or the component video connections. I took my DVD5 to the retailer from whom I bought the TV and we tried the DVI out on a Panasonic plasma and an older generation Mitsubishi 1080i DLP where it worked fine. I then tried a showroom model of my 1080p set and again no picture. So far no answers from either Naim or Mitsubishi. If anyone has any words of wisdom?
