Which Genesis on vinyl?

Posted by: apye! on 14 February 2010

Can you please help me decide which early Genesis albums to buy?

I have recently got into Peter Gabriels' early solo work, no.1 & 3 albums and was wondering what he was like when he was with Genesis.

Are there any good ones to start with?

I am thinking of getting 'Seconds Out-Live' and 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway'. The latter I have found as a 200g classic reissue, is it worth the extra money?

Thanks in advance..

Foxtrot, Selling England, Nursery Cryme, Lamb - they are all good - Trespass as well.

Is 200G worth it? - depends on the price. I have the Classic 200G of Foxtrot and it popped away - was not impressed but I was unlucky there I guess.

Seconds Out is wonderful with Collins doing the singing.

Just to echo what Lontano said, 'Foxtrot' and 'Selling England by the Pound' are probably the best of the Peter Gabriel period of Genesis. Those albums showcase the whole band.

'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' is very much dominated by Peter Gabriel, it follows an abstract story written by him as a concept album. Much of the music follows the lyrics, and there are some great tracks. I would say that as a concept album, perhaps similarly to Pink Floyd 'The Wall' there are sections where the music is overly dominated by the narrative lyrics.

Many Genesis fans love this album and place it as their crowning achievement, others, probably in the minority, find it all too dark and lacking the wholeness of the more band orientated albums.

Pause..... why hasn't ROTF recommended 'Trespass' yet, a late lie in?

I'm with the other posters on this Trespass is by far and away the best Genesis elpee - however if you're looking for a progressive rock elpee then I'd buy Whateversgebringswesing by Kevin Ayers and the Whole World first Smile

Nope busy listening to my Chas & Dave albums - try Live at Abbey Road - Albert Lee's guitar work is simply amazing.

I'm making a run for it before I'm accused of dumbing down the forum.
Can I help it if C&D and Bert sound better than some obscure avant-garde jazz trio?

Lots of good ones. If I was choosing.

1. Seconds Out
2. Trick of the Tail.
3. Foxtrot
4. Duke
5. Selling
6. Lamb
7. Wind and Wuthering
8. Nursery
9. ATTWT
10. Trespass

If I were you, I would save the money on the Classic 200g and go and buy them all at Bens Collector records or the other shop in Guildford for the same price as or less than the Lamb 200g.

Then when you have done that get the other Gabriel albums and the first 4 Steve Hackett albums.

A trip to Bens sounds a good idea, do you think he will have most of them?

Thanks Lontano!

Quite probably. Or there is the Collectors Record Centre in Woodbridge Road. He tends to keep most of the prog. I bought the complete Genesis collection for backup on vinyl at the collectors records in Kingston. Genesis vinyl is not hard to find and quite cheap, so you can keep buying until you get a copy you like.

'Wind and Wuthering' only 7th, but an interesting question.

I think I read that an on-line poll of fans put 'Selling England by the Pound' at number 1, but everyone has their slant on the band. I also think that must have been a poll of the early fans. I don't think that many around here will recommend the post 1980 albums at all.

My stab at it would be.

1. 'Wind and Wuthering'
2. 'Selling England by the Pound'
3. 'Foxrot'
4. 'Seconds Out'
5. 'Duke'
6. 'Trick of the Tail'
7. 'Nursery Crime'

After that I am not that bothered, 'The Lamb' has some good tracks, 'Trespass' a nice atmosphere.

To be honest after 'Nursery Crime' I would recommend going on to the Steve Hackett solo albums, 'Spectral Mornings' and 'Defector'.

If you do not have Peter Gabriel 4, that is worth hearing. 2 is a bit odd, Robert Fripp was not a great producer, but at a tangent Fripp's solo album 'Exposure' has a wonderful version of 'Here Comes the Flood' as well as some excellent vocal contributions from Peter Hammill, and Phil Collins on drums.

Trespass by a country mile - the fist elpee From Genesis to Revelation has some good moments too. After that there are some highlights, but the elpees are bit inconsistent - Nursery Cryme (The Musical Box), Foxtrot (Get 'em out by Friday) and Selling England (I Know What I like) are worth a spin or two, but from then on ... my recommendation is to stay with PG's solo projects.

However, Trespass stands out for me.

Hardly ... that's where young Bert started in Heads, Hands and Feet with Sir Charles Hodges. Is it because they are Spurs supporters you don't like them? Nobody's perfect.

BTW in case I didn't mention it - Trespass is the best Genesis elpee and contains The Knife: the best track they ever did.

I don't know if it is clear from all the other posts, but Genesis with PG was Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England and Lamb. (I suppose there is also the prequel album Revelation). All after Lamb were without PG.

Trespass, Foxtrot and Selling England have each been my favourite at various times, but you won't find any consensus among fans on a "best".

No one has mentioned the best of them all (IMHO!):

I'm sure it was just an oversight.

But the versions of 'Watcher of the Skies', 'Get 'Em Out By Friday' and 'The Musical Box' are prog-rock perfection. And then there's that bass pedal solo from Michael Rutherford.

Need I say more?

And it's only £3.98 on CD (1994 remaster) from Amazon at the moment. Don't just sit there, now's the time to act!

Just noticed the original title to this thread. I'm sure you could get it on LP too. Ive got it twice on vinyl and once on CD. At the end of the day, it's all about the music, not the format.

I agree Clive - great album. And munch's favourite has one of the best intros to any album - wind it up and let it go. Triffic. Struggles a bit after that IMO

I have always liked ATTWT - an important album for me in the development of my musical tastes. It is not their most consistent albums with a few weak tracks but there are some very fine moments - as a result it still gets played quite regularly.

Best Genesis LP is Selling England By The Pound. No doubts.
Posted on: 17 February 2010 by Simon R
Premmyboy, love your location, were you there in 78 and 92?

Selling England comes in at 2 for me.
The Lamb is not just the best Genesis album, it is simply the best album...ever. I've worn out a couple of vinyls in the past.

Listening to ATTWT at the mo, takes me back to 78, Follow you Follow Me would have to be in my top handfull of Genesis songs ever too.

Was Knebworth 1 really 1978? Brilliant concert - I always remember the sunset, and watching the planes fly in to Luton. When I see the cover of ATTWT, it brings it back. Knebworth 2 was when I was living in Denmark but it was live on satellite on one of the German channels - wish I'd been there.
Another vote for Lamb, but Selling England or Foxtrot come close.
Posted on: 18 February 2010 by Premmyboy
Sadly No!!!! Moved to Knebworth in 1990. Never seen Genesis live. Although I have seen Peter Gabriel a few times. I would have loved 1978 for sure but I think the band lost their way after that.

The discussion on ATTWT has just prompted me to dig out my copy and have another listen.

It really is as munch describes; a good collection of songs. There is something about the production that really seems to challenge your system in a way that the albums they put out before and after just don't.

I remember hearing this on a on a friend's system while at Liverpool Uni comprising a Thorens turntable through Quad amps and Mordaunt Short speakers and realising I had never heard the album properly until that point. Sounded even better this afternoon.....

Genesis are somewhat unusual in that nobody can agree quite which is the best LP; most of the usual suspects have been mentioned earlier in this thread. I think that collectively they just kept making consistently high quality albums without necessarily peaking. So buy everything they did in the 70s and you won't go wrong.
