Which Genesis on vinyl?
Posted by: apye! on 14 February 2010
Can you please help me decide which early Genesis albums to buy?
I have recently got into Peter Gabriels' early solo work, no.1 & 3 albums and was wondering what he was like when he was with Genesis.
Are there any good ones to start with?
I am thinking of getting 'Seconds Out-Live' and 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway'. The latter I have found as a 200g classic reissue, is it worth the extra money?
Thanks in advance..

I can it's Trespass - nothing else they ever did comes closequote:Genesis are somewhat unusual in that nobody can agree quite which is the best LP

I can hear some members yawning now.

Precisely; no-one can agree. You think its Trespass, others say Selling England or The Lamb or Seconds Out or And Then There Were Three.
I rest my case.

A minority of 1 again.

Of course the best is Trick of the Tail with the mega drums/vocals from the truly wonderful and hugely talented Phil Collins.
There are very few TRUE Genesis fans that will put Trespass at the top of the pile (only the folkie brigade). Of course Trespass is still better than most output of other bands but just in the lower middle ground of the output of the great Genesis.

Prompted by the posts above I've just put Trespass on as I haven't played it for a while. Stagnation is as good as anything from the Charterhouse boys.
As my Selling England needs replacing, I wonderded if anyone here has tried any of the new Genesis CD releases, I think they are digital re-masters, but alas that doesn't seem to guarantee quality.

The Gabriel years remasters are the best of the new remaster bunch. Problem is they are remixed as well so not the original mixes and although not bad I always play the originals.
Get the originals off ebay or the definitive editions are not bad either. If you really want to splash out look for the black triangles which are very good.

Munch, Lontano,
Most of my Genesis CDs are Definitive Edition Remasters, including my partly damaged SEBTP.
How do I identify originals and excuse my ignorence, but what are black triangles?

Original made b4 the Definite Edition remasters (which are good as well IMHO)
Ist Japanese pressing - command a high price and probably not that diff to UK original above.

There are 4 on ebay right now. One auction starting at £30 and 3 buy it now ranging from £70-96. I picked up mine for £50.
If you want to search for it, type in "Genesis 28VD" . If you want to search for other Genesis Black Triangles type in "Genesis 32VD" Single albums are 32VD and doubles are 28VD.

Thanks , looks like Simon and I are looking at the same ones.
I'm also a tight wad, the most I've ever paid for an album is £45 for Alison K and Union Stn Live triple vinyl B/S.

What are the Toshiba VJCP-68096 & VJCP-68097 versions then?
This is all so complicated.

This is original Japanese mini-LP CD from 1999. No idea what it is like, whether it is the same mastering as the 1994 definitive edition remasters or not.
I bought all the Genesis Black Triangles as they are my no 1 group. But you can do just as well with the UK originals or the Definitive Edition remasters are not too bad either. Just do not bother with the 2007 remasters.

A trip to Bens sounds a good idea, do you think he will have most of them?
Thanks Lontano!
Quite probably. Or there is the Collectors Record Centre in Woodbridge Road. He tends to keep most of the prog. I bought the complete Genesis collection for backup on vinyl at the collectors records in Kingston. Genesis vinyl is not hard to find and quite cheap, so you can keep buying until you get a copy you like.
I have at last managed to get to Ben's and managed to pick up:
and I just had to get Trespass off ebay, I think there was someone who mentioned it once or twice!

I am due back in Guildford on Tuesday I will give Collectors Records a try then.
