Naim network software and NAS Folder structure

Posted by: AMA on 25 December 2010

AFAIK Naim network software does not support a direct access to the file structure on the NAS drive.
I wonder if it's possible now or in future to tag the albums with my own text label and arrange browsing the store by specific tags?

For example, my primary file structure is quite regular -- arranged and sorted by Artists which contains albums sorted by year.

Apart from this I keep additional root folders _NaimLabel, _LinnRecords, _Chesky, _FIM etc which contains links to the corresponding albums. Instead I can add the same labels to the FLAC tags and then browse the store by particular tag, say: all music from Naim Label.

The Uniti and a Qute will display the file structure on a NAS if the UPnP server on the NAS provides the information. - If that answers the point that you are making.

Hi, Michael. Do you mean I can browse the file structure on NAS drive and get inside the folders and select the track and start it playing?

What you are asking for seems so simple but its not. UPNP is not your standard file system, it don't work that way.

Well you can browse a NAS 'MUSIC' folder by 'Folders and File names' using 'ASSET UPnP'as your media server. I file all my CDs in a folder structure on my NAS so for example:
- JAZZ
- Big Band
- Piano
- Guitar
- Horn

In these subfolders are subfolders with Artist Name in which individual Album title subfolders sit.

Asset drills down and lists the tracks in an album from which you can take your pick. Tags including Album Art make it all the way thru' that fine. Alternatively you can search by A-Z on Album title or Artist or Genre etc.

No sure if this is what you are after?

regards
Geoff

Yes, I thought this feature is unavailable with Naim streamers Confused You keep referring to UPnP servers -- but what about Naim servers like nServe or HDX? Do they support the native file structure browsing/playing?

On My Qute, I select:

UPnP
CD Store (The name I have give to my UPnP server)
PC Directory (I could select Audio and then make further selections based on Tag data.)
MyMusic (An Alias than points to /media/Music on the NAS)
Pop (or Classical)
Bob Dylan
Highway 61 Revisited (or another album)
01 Like a Rolling Stone (The first tack - as it happens)

(When I use DBpoweramp to rip CDs I use the automatic track numbering facility to number the tracks and thus ensure that they appear in the original sequence rather than alphabetical order.)

The Qute will then play all the other tracks in this album.

That I am able to do this depends on the way the UPnP server than I am using works and has been configured, and the way I have stored the albums on the NAS.
