Mac mini/Qute question
Posted by: Data on 30 December 2010
I'm about to connect an 'etherneted' Mac Mini to the nDAC. There's a Qute in another room synched to the wireless network. It shouldn't have any problems seeing the Mini on the network and releasing music should it? Just thought I'd check.

Or use a airport express's digital out in your wifi network ( if you have it ) Then you can use iTunes library on you Mac mini (or with the app on a iPhone or iPod Touch ). More stable and quicker then any UpNp software which is available. I had it. i went back to the AE

Majestic is free and the most stable that I have found. Lacking a few things but I'm sure it will be improved with the next version.

I mean this: airport express
The signal of your modem ( the incoming signal for internet ) you need to put it in this airport express. The the signal is sent out as a WIFI. Your iMac is in your WIFI. The iMac is connect with wifi and the music will be transported in your WIFI. On the airport express there is a optical out to connect to your nDAC of other good DAC.

Um, robbert that did not make a lot of sense.
As discused the qute is not technically a computer so it won't 'see' your mac. You just need to 'broadcast' your audio files for the QUTE to see and this is done via UPNP. and indeed you would do the same on your imac.
In the long term you may consider centralising your audio to a nas. (network attached storage) 9 times out of 10 these devices can also broadcast UPNP, and usually have an itunes server as well so all your devices can tap the same music folder.

Mac based UPnP not very satisfactory - Eyeconnect bearable, Majestic IMHO flakey and won't transcode aiff from iTunes - (fine if you want Mp3 only but then why would you want a Naim) Songbook is dire etc etc.
Mac makes sense if you want to connect by dig out.
Low power NAS - Synology or Thecus good makes. Better still use Vortexbox - a suite of Linux programmes that specialize in ripping, tagging, storing and streaming. Think of it as a super NAS.
Use an old PC, buy a ready made solution or buid your own server (Tranquil PC Harmony) Vortexbox is updated every few months and can be managed from any PC that has a browser.

I had a qute, and i had UpNp software as well ( twonky and other i've tried ). nothing was stable. The iTunes ( remote app ) with the iMac/airport express is. So that's much better then the UpNp solutions. It goes to the digital input on the qute. You also use the DAC of the qute. only you bring the digital signal on an other way.
I now stream my music the same way ti my nDAC. It sounds great.

Tog - have you tried Chorus DS to see if it'll work with the Naim network players. It's designed for the Linn DS players but seems to be ok seving out to other UPnP renderers. I've found it very stable and unlike most of the others, integrates with an existing iTunes library.

AllenB, thanks for the clarification. I might go the AE route and insert a CDP in the main system. The ripped route doesn't seem to sound quite a good as CD but I do like the convenience of having music downstairs so I might run what is in effect 2 systems. Thanks also to everyone else for the UPnP recommendations.

Am trying it - no joy so far apart from 20 minutes scanning my library and searching for a non-existent Linn DS.
