Naim Uniti?
Posted by: biko1947 on 28 December 2010
HI, I am interested in the Uniti. Main objective is going for a neat setup with Streaming from Laptop.
However, after talking to the dealer, we need to buy some software in order for the uniti to talk to the Laptop. Currently using iTune and MediaMonkey, and these 2 software can't co-exist with the Uniti. IT is a pity.
Hence, how can i hook up the laptop to the Uniti (except using LAN cable)?
btw, How is the Uniti performance? there seem not many thread on Uniti after running a search in this forum.

What sort of laptop do you have, and what OS is it running?

Depending upon your laptop
You can attach via digital / optical (mac)
Or you can choose a UPnP server to run on your laptop and stream directly to the Uniti.
Uniti is a great bit of kit - very flexible and can be upgraded in the future by adding a power amp.

I agree with Tog - the Uniti is a fantastic piece of kit that sounds superb. Mine works fine both wired and wirelessly - UPNP streaming is faultless in my experience using Foobar (a free music player - I think Media Monkey does a similar job but I'm not sure if MM does UPNP streaming). I have a desktop in my rack that connects directly to the Uniti by toslink and I also access music from my office laptop via my wireless network. For sure you don't need to buy software to get a Uniti to play music from your laptop. Apologies to Tog & co. but going by the posts on this forum it's a lot easier to run a Uniti in a Windows environment than a Mac one (ducks and runs for cover...).

I use my UNITI streaming wired from the free version of Asset UPnP installed on my WinXP laptop and I'm very satisfied. i'm planning to buy the full version of Asset UPnP to have more options available (Dynamic playlists: find newest, least or most played tracks & albums. Jukebox (random) selection)

Another vote for Asset UPnP here. Using Asset on my windows home server box and it and the Uniti haven't missed a beat. Very happy and also considering buying the full version of Asset.

And another one for Asset. I think I've tried every combination going but Asset UPnP and Asset Control works without the bugs and hiccups of the others. It can also stream internet radio to the Uniti (I know I can select Iradio from the Uniti remote but now I have laptop control of internet radio).

Wait a minute! You can use NaimUniti with Foobar2000?! Cool! That would be my dream-gear! Why no one said that before?! I almost bought Majik DS-I

Yep -Foobar2000 works fine streaming to my Uniti via wireless - just get the UPnP plugin - all free!

Do you have gapless playback with Uniti+Foobar?
Posted on: 04 January 2011 by Pev
It hasn't been an issue for me yet and I haven't bothered to get my Uniti updated for gapless (a main feature of the recent software update) but I'm pretty sure you can. Foobar apparently plays gapless automatically without even a plugin.

I've played with foobar + fooUPNP (upnp server and control point for foobar.
Since the latest firmware upgrade (probably inspired in the upnp area by bubbleguum the maker of fooupnp, all works fine excepted the volume control (Naim limitation).
BUT like balma01, rednotdead or Redmires I vote for Illustrate products.
I actually run the infernal trio with the wonderful uniti:
Dbpoweramp as ripper with FULL tag engine on wav files, terrific for 38$
Asset UPNP (full registered 28$) as upnp server installed on my laptop. This server can serve file on a nas without problem
Asset Control (beta version) perfect integration with Asset server.
it's definitively (at less for me) the perfect solution to stream music from an Uniti at very reasonable price (especially if you already have a pc)because the 3 softwares are perfectly suited.
Actually Asset control is 95% developed and I have only minor problems. This software is exactly what I've asked recently but it's clear Naim will not develop this in a near future.(read more here)
Perhaps the main inconvenient is to run AssetUpnp only on a PC (or a file server under windows server)
Mac users cannot use this system and common Nas cannot run directly Asset UPNP.
As we want a kind graphic interface to pilot the uniti the PC must be switch on, so if the server is on the pc this is not a problem.
A file server (as hp provide) and a nice touchpad Pc could be the ultra design solution...

You could use something like a Tranquil T2 - silent fanless - Dual Core Atom - as a headless server. They come pre-installed with Win Home Server so they will run Asset out of the box.

Tog,
What do you think about Hp solutions (professional products: HP StorageWorks and home server: HP Mediasmart server)?
As these product run under Microsoft Windows Home server I suppose it's also possible to monitor them via web interface from an iPad?
I thinks these Hp products are cheaper than Tranquil server... and the capacity is upgradeable...

Nothing wrong with HP Home/Media Servers ( their laptops are dreadful ) but the main advantages of the Tranquil lie in very low power usage and fanless cooling. I'm not a fan of Windows but if you must have Asset you have no choice.
The T2 can be upgraded to 4TB and all you need is a screwdriver.
