Sony Professional CRT monitors...

Hello out there

IIRC, Sony produce a small CRT monitor that was / is used by the TV industry - not Trinitron, but something else.

I gather its available to mere mortals but cannot for the life of me recall what they're called - any ideas?

TIA

Might be "Profeel" you're thinking of.

Sounds about right - thanks, Tony.

They are high grade Trinitron monitors, but very good if you like the Trinitron look. I love it.

All my CRT TVs were Trinitrons. Back then, Sony was somewhat of a premium brand in relation to the Japanese pack. There were always those euro-snobs, though!

Hi

I bought the 20" , Japanese made Profeel with tuner in the early 80's.It was and , in my opinion still is the best CRT tube ever made.Eventually the green gun wore out and this affected the colour balance and it was eventually binned .It lasted almost 20 years and when new was very expensive. The reason I bought it was not just the picture but it had no speakers built in which was sonically important as it sat between a pair of Isobarik's.

I later bought a secondhand 27" which was made in Wales but these were nowhere as good as the 20" Japanese product and the one I bought only lasted a few months before anything white was tinted yellow .Black and white films became sepia so it also ended up at the tip.

There were also professional Profeel models , made for The TV industry. These were mounted in a sort of cube frame and late versions had 900 lines of resolution. They were certainly the very best of all and I bet the really cost a bomb.

Sadly they are probably all worn out by now.

Regards.

I had the last generation of Sony's monitor like TVs : the 1998 KV 32-FD1 16/9 Wega TV with no speakers (additionnal bricks like the profeels) and 2 VGA inputs accepting progressive 640x480 and 800x600 (720x576 in forced mode) resolutions from a computer ... or DVD5's RGB-HV from the 5 BNC output Winker

The TV still works, I gave it to a friend.

Is it better than the Loewe Aconda?

Hi

Yes,vastly superior in my opinion and I used to sell Loewe.

But the Profeel was a 4 by 3 set and would not really fit in with today's users. It was also not a true flatscreen as it was curved side to side but flat top to bottom. There was no compromise on the tube and Profeel's were as deep as wide as a shorter tube would have compromised performance.

The Profeel was very expensive.

At the time you could buy a 20" Sony Trinitron TV with a top line expensive Video recorder like the Panasonic NV850 for the same money as the 20" Profeel tube and tuner alone would cost without stand,Teletext unit and speaker.

The Aconda is a late 1990's 32" widescreen and so can do lots of things the early 1980'2 Profeel can't.

I still use CRT but chose Panasonic over Sony a few years ago as the Sony's I looked at could not do 4 by 3 without the sides being bendy because the electron guns were not up to it.

Things have really moved on now and if I were buying new it would probably bee a Panasonic plasma. My Panasonic CRT's still do a great job, especially as they can be picked up for nothing. We have bay window's in each room so depth is not a problem.

Regards.

In 2005 I bought Sony's top of the line 34" flatscreen, widescreen CRT TV, 1080p. You can view it from any angle in the room. It was fun watching the two guys who delivered it maneuver it into place. I think it weighs something like 225 pounds. Some people couldn't understand how I could spend $3000 on a glass picture tube, but the picture is fantastic.

That 34" Sony 2005 set operates in 1080i and is 200 lbs. There is no such thing as a 1080p CRT consumer set.
To the OP: the Profeels came in the 19" & 25".

My bad. I meant 1080i. I thought it was heavier than 200 pounds,  it certainly seemed so. You're right, it's exactly 198 pounds.
