Direct 2.1 possible ?
Posted by: Roy Donaldson on 14 May 2005
Hi there,
Just before heading out tonight, I've been playing a lot of more dance orientated CDs. I normally have my AV2 setup to run in Direct mode off the CD input. However, tonight I've set it up to process it in DPLII Music, to gain access to routing the LFE to the subwoofer. This also unfortunately brings in my center and rears, which I don't really want running on a CD. but the low bass going out to my Rel is quite nice
I don't think there is, but was wondering if there is a way to set the AV2 up to run in a Direct mode, but with the low frequency filter routing below 80Hz out to the sub ? ie. a kind of Direct 2.1 mode ?

So in other words it's possible. The AV2 has to be set in STEREO mode, which means you lose the cleaner DIRECT mode, but gain the functionality.
I guess the best way to do this really is to set the AV2 to DIRECT mode and use the second output to drive the Line Level inputs of the sub. Otherwise use the speaker leads.

Sub output can be generated whatever the speaker configuration by enabling BASS MIX (All modes except DIRECT)
Does this not contradict this? -

In STEREO mode sub information is only present if speakers are set to small or Bass Mix is enabled
So, what
actually happens if you want to select large front speakers?

I tried setting my AV2 up (running AVc06) to both Small and Large front speakers, with BM on and off and playing a CD in via an analog input, did not notice any output to the subwoofer at all ???

Please clarify this for me. Which manual is correct as far as BassMix is concerned
Just to (try to) clear up
BASS MIX.
The original paper manual (Bizarro World) had the definition EXACTLY the wrong way around..
The Correct Description of the Bass Mix Function is:
19.7.2 Bass Mix
The Bass Mix option routes main left and right loudspeaker bass information to the sub-woofer. It is selected or disabled by pressing the handset menu key followed by the 1 key.
Note: Bass Mix is useful for encode formats that carry no specific sub-woofer information.

Adam
Does this then mean the AV2 has a stereo plus sub mode???

That is what it says. But.......

Had another play with this tonight and, if you send in a coax digital feed stereo signal, set the AV2 for Stereo processing....it plays back using the front left/right and the SUB too !
So, it looks like only if you feed it with an analog left/right feed, will it not be able to route LFE to the sub.

Direct 2.1 mode (in the analogue domain) would require a 6ch or 8ch VIPS input with a discrete LFE channel.

I'm glad it was 'solved'.
However, when that answer came up before I tried the coax feed and thought it sounded worse than the direct option.
Never mind.

Yes, but I can only use the digital coax feed in from my DVD player, so it doesn't sound all that good.
The Naim CD5 I have has only analog outputs and so I still cannot get it to use the sub with my CD player :-(

Update on this one. I have set this up now, and it does not work. However, Naim have set this up on their system and it does work...so, would anyone else with an AV2, sub and CD player be able to test this out to see what output you get:
Setup:
CD player - analog input - AV2 (set to Stereo Mode) - Sub out - Subwoofer.
Play a CD in the CD player and using the AV2 set into Stereo mode (not direct) see whether you get any low frequency ouput to the subwoofer. You may need to switch between BM on and off, Menu 1 on the AV2 controller.
It would be interesting to see if it works for you or not.
Thanks,
Roy.

Whch AV2 input are you using? How is it declared / labeled?

David,
Using Analog input 3, though the analog input used should have no bearing on this feature.
What does it do on your AV2 ?
