Gordon,
John Kelman from All About Jazz has a real passion for the European Jazz scene and also prog rock, so his tastes are very similar to mine.
Here is his list for the year
http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=38321
Jazzwise magazine named Phronesis Alive as their album of the jazz year and that would be mine too - must get to see them live
My next albums in no particular order are
Charles Lloyd - Mirror
Arild Andersen - Early Quartets
Cassandra Wilson - Silver Pony
John McLaughlin - To the One
Ketil Bjornstad - Remeberance
Markku Ounaskari - Kuara
Nik Bartsch - Llyria
Robert Wyatt - For the Ghosts Within
Steve Tibbetts - Natural Causes
Supersilent 10
Tryvge Seim/Andreas Utnem - Purcor
Wollny/Kruse/Schaefer - Em Live
Brah Mehldau - Highway Rider
Jarrett/Haden - Jasmine
Trichotomy - Variations
Neil Cowley - Radio Silence
Dan Berglund Tonbruket
This guy has a good site and has revealed his 50-11 best releases with top 10 to come

Excellent Adrian...I was hoping to generate some discusssion of alternate titles for best jazz album of 2010 as the list I found and posted didn't concur with mine but then I haven't heard every jazz album yet!
I'll check out some of your albums before New Years Eve..

A good list Gordon and yes, Mr Rypdal's album was a bit of a crime.

I won't list mine as a lot of them have alreay been mentioned - especially Anat Fort and the Wollny, Kruse and Schaeffer live album. I also agree that the Phronesis live album is excellent, and a real find (for me). Of the original list I'm most intrigued by "The Spark of Being", Dave Douglas' triple CD of music inspired by the Frankenstein myth - I mean really, what's not to like. Finally a trio of strong ECMs that don't appear to have been mentioned so far:
Food - Quiet Inlet
Francois Couturier - Un Jour si Blanc
Stefano Battaglia - Pastorale

I'm going to revisit this years albums but I'm struggling for a standout. Last year I had two albums that I love so much and play constantly, Lars Danielsson "Tarantella" and Tomasz Stanko Quintet "Dark Eyes"
I would rather hope it's just my fussy nature and there is something there that I have missed. Carry on posting and I will hopefully find something or rediscover something I already have?

Gordon,
There is nothing there that REALLY excites me, enough to be included in a "best of" list. I think this has been a weak year on the Jazz front. Just my opinion of course. I can't even say I've been to some great Jazz concerts, never mind.

I think its more of a case of you have bought so many ECM's and others this year and not got to know them.
Because the listening time has not been there?
More cd's than hours in a year.
When you relax you play the stuff you know well.
Stu
Yes, I think you have a good point there. More CD's than I have a proper chance to listen to. Stu, you have got me sussed!

For me, the best jazz album of 2010:
The best older jazz album (2002) discovered in 2010:

Best testimonial ever! Based on such empirical observation . . . that of a 5 year old, I've gone ahead and ordered this CD. It had better be good Munch, or your son goes on my ignore list

Max - my money is on that comment being for the E.S.T album which I know Munch loves to bits. Do you have some E.S.T? Well worth checking out. Still the Jarrett is good, so I am sure you will enjoy.

Mark - I think you are right - nothing of the calibre of these two this year but still there was some good music released, but not a classic year

merde . . . okay I will have to pick up the E.S.T. album. And thanks for setting the record straight.

you won't be disappointed although it did not become the classic in my eyes that I thought it might be before release. I might be wrong though and Munch's comment may be for the Jarrett

Three very enjoyable albums I agree which narrowly missed my best jazz albums top ten..

Surely one of the best jazz albums of the year is this one:
When Larry Met Harry - Larry Goldings and Harry Allen

Sublime ...
