For those who aren't about to rip

Posted by: Guido Fawkes on 13 April 2009

The HDX may have the best ripping engine in the world, but I don't want to rip any CDs or digitalise my vinyl.

So why post here - well I do want a nice office system that can play files I've downloaded to my computer. If that same system could play Internet Radio then that would be fantastic. If, and I know I'm asking a lot, it could get DAB stations like Radio Five Live and BBC 7 then I'd think it was even better. Now, if that same device could let me plug in an iPod and play music from a solid state memory device like a USB stick then I'd be almost ready to buy. I say almost because I'd need a bit of amplification, say around 50 watts per channel - bit like the Nait 5i. Oh and could it play CDs too commensurate with the quality of the excellent CD5i.

The clincher would be if I could get all that at under £2k - I've been waiting for my friendly dealer to tell me he has such a device, but so far he hasn't got such a beast in stock.

Oh well - perhaps my expectations were too great, but the product I've described would be ideal for my little office.

Just a thought, Rotf

Not exactly asking permission, but wondering if I'm in search of the NaimUnicorn or some such mythical beast - I see a picture on the web site, but no sign of its realisation.

Is the NU going to run under £2K?

I have a empty space in my office too ROTF...! I was thinking a pair of nice n-Sats to go with it, all sitting pretty amongst the Macs, although I'm not sure what they are going to stand on !? Winker

An official update would be nice/helpful, but I guess if dealers don't even have dates then there's a delay of sorts... Confused

Yes Winky, £1995 inc VAT.

ROTF hi --

SONOS sounds very close to what you describe although it does not play CDs nor (I believe) will it take a USB stick. It will though play Internet radio (including BBC) downloaded files but also provide access to last.fm napster etc. I cannot, though, comment on the sound quality.

Edit: ah, you are just commenting on Uniti. Apologies.

TBH, though, what you describe sounds like a computer with an outboard DAC into a NAIT.
