Yeah it's good, eh? I wouldn't mind having Robert's guitar collection. What is that one with all the white buttons/knobs?

That semi acoustic bass is a pretty sweet thing, too.

No idea!

I've just been listening to the Foo's Skin and Bones acoustic set - amazing DD mix.

Blu-ray picture quality is pretty good on this disc. I've not seen it in another format to compare, though.

On DVD5
Its hard to believe it's 40 years since this was recorded,I bet this was the most amazing new music to behold at the time, it still is today.

I just did. Haven't watched it yet, though. Watching this...

Jeff is next.

OK. Now I'm watching Jeff. Well actually watching the bass player just as much. Tal Wilkenfeld - a young girl from Australia. At the age of 21 she had already played with Chick Corea, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck et. al. Quite a talent. Has anyone heard her album?

Hi Mr Underhill,

are you using a DVD player, by any chance a DVD5? With multichannel analogue? I have that configuration and am looking for software. Just bought Alan Parsons' >The turn of a friendly card< (when I'm about to put apostrophes I feel Adam's eyes on my neck), but would love some more universal opuses. I have downloaded HD, both stereo 24/192 and MC 24/96 files as free samples from a disc label's site, but it's a few spare movements from minor works. Do you have any good tip?

Thanks,
Massimo

Hi Massimo,

I do have a DVD5 with DVD-A converter - but I don't use it for music reproduction.

I use a Meridian 596 - it outputs 9624, which I feed through a Benchmark DAC1.

I own about forty DVD-As, which I have ripped. I've then burned the files back to standard DVD, which I play on the 596.

I have downloaded many files from various sites, and I have posted reviews on the distributed audio section, together with notes on how to burn both DVDA & standard DVD.

Hope that helps.

The Magic Flute

As directed by Kenneth Branagh.

I think this DVD is a mis-fire. The music is, of course, great. The bass has a truly subterranean voice. Loads of great stuff ....but:

Branagh has chosen to hang the plot off a surreal WWI opening, and I feel this is just all too heavy for what is such a whimsical storyline.

I've watched it numerous times as there is much I really like, but ultimately I still would plump for Bergman's made for TV version.

Martin,

thanks very much, I'll search the distributed audio section.

As for the Magic Flute, I know both, and agree with you.

Recorded live in Frejus, France, August 1982.

Robert's guitar on the cover is a National Valco. Either a 62 or 63. Fibreglass body, which was very innovative for the time. The headstock is now known as the "Gumby" style. Also fibreglass. The guitar is very "collectible", apparently.

Thanks for the info Winky - I've actually always wanted to know what that guitar was ! I know Robert used it almost exclusively throughout that tour and that whole period....I always liked him on the Fender 6 six bass though...

Actually, all of the Cure were into their collectable guitars....When I used to go and see them (a lot!) I always stood on the left in front of Porl Thompson (now thankfully back in the group and doing his thing live) - He had an amazing collection of guitars in his rack...He had a gorgeous red Gibson 335 which was his main choice for the oodles of 'scratchy' rhythm he would lay down...!

Hi David,

Although I am a child of the 60's I am not a "Child of the 60's", and so this music has no automatic resonance with me. I do like their hits, but a lot of the rest of this leaves me pretty cold. For me it is a bit like being the only sober person at a party, although alcohol is the wrong simile!

The PCM soundtrack is variable in quality, and at best OK

Bruce Springsteen On Stage
Visual Milestones.

Bought this simply 'cause it was £4 at HMV, and have been very pleasantly surprised.

PCM Soundtrack, although this is NOT stated on the cover; and a good one.

Unusually this is Springsteen playing a song and then talking about what lead him to write it. He is self effacing and erudite.

Really enjoyed this and recommend it.

Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood Live From Madison Square Garden

Bought this on spec as I like them both, still not sure. Excellent PCM soundtrack.

Blues focused, and I suspect I'll get to like this the more I listen to it.

This was quite good, great band with him, Glad I didn't spend $100+ when he was here at Nokia Theater.
