Posted by: scottyhammer on 15 March 2004
hi guys,
i am currently bidding on a new cdx2 on ebay.
then out of the blue comes an e mail from abroad saying they have the same kit and we could do a deal!
i know its from abroad as they state shipping, etc.
and the english is not perfect in the text.
has anyone come across this sort of behaviour on e bay before?
ive chosen to ignore it . but just wanted to make you all aware of it!
regards, scotty

I bought a NAT-02 on e-bay recently and received a similar e-mail from Spain. Very bad English and as a bonus, they had 5 brand new and boxed in stock!!
Laughable but thye may get better

hi camlan,
so how can we stop it??

I don't think you can. I guess it's not so bad for specialist hi-fi as most people will see through it straight away but could be dangerous elsewhere. E-Bay are aware and there are warnings on the site I believe. Again though it's just a case of let the buyer beware.

i tell you what though!
it did make me sit up and take notice.
i was well happy before the e mails, now a little aprehensive.

Related to this, I did have a spate of 3 or 4 emails which were spoofing the ebay appearance and asking for a form to be completed to logon to ebay to verify something or other. As it needed both id and password, it looked very dodgy and sure enough I reported it to ebay who confirmed it is a scam to get your details.
Quite convincing though - so watch out!

I have had a look at the auction and it seems OK, the serial number is right for example. If I were you and it was possible, I would collect the CDX2 paying by bankers draft/cash just to totally satisfy yourself that it's 'right'.
BTW, I think it's a good buy at present price but not much more. I bought mine ex dem from a naim dealer 6 months old for £2k

E-Bay would like you to forward these dodgy and unsolicited E-Mails to them. I don't have the URL to hand, I think its in the Help section.

Ive had the same problem several times on ebay, the record being 38 separate emails when i bid on a chord amp a while back! Most of them were pretty obvious, poor english etc and one of them even described a Chord SPM1200C as a laptop! Check this one out!?

Hello there.
Sorry to drop in like this but I have noticed you are interested in the item matching the auction #3069905733. I was wondering if you would be interested in a similar Chord SPM 1200c Power Amp that I am selling for 1420.00GBP .
The product is brand new, still factory sealed and as you notice it's considerably cheaper than what was auctioned and I want to give you the opportunity to get it at a bargain. I am only selling this because of some personal problems. If this offer seems appealing to you please e-mail me back and I will provide you with the rest of the information needed to complete the transaction.
I am a registered and serious seller on eBay and my feedback proves it. (my user name on eBay is HALLOWEENIII and I'm rated 50+ positive) If you want I could ask eBay to contact you and certify I am indeed serious and trustworthy. This transaction will also be covered under eBay's Fraud Protection Program! I will pay shipping & handling + any other fees involved.
Once again, excuse me if I have bothered you with this message and also please accept all my best.
Respectfully yours,
Bob TAYLOR

Its fair to say most are pretty obvious but you cant be too careful, people obviously make a living out of it so some people sadly fall for it.
Anyway good luck with the CDX2!? you wont be disappointed, im over the moon with mine! I also made the mistake of listening to the XPS2 and the wife still hasnt forgiven me for 'just having to have it' she seems to think furniture to sit on is more important than HiFi???
