NBLs coming this evening (maybe)

Posted by: London Lad on 20 March 2004

Hi all,

I’m going to look at some NBLs this evening and if everything is in order then I may be bringing them home with me Smile

I can’t find any instructions on the Naim site and was wondering if anyone can tell me all about the transit bits and bobs.

The seller seems a good sort and seems to know his stuff (and may well have the original instructions) but I just want to be sure before I consider moving them.

Thanks

Graham.

My experience of them is limited, but I know that the two transit bolts to secure the Nested Box Section are essential.

There are two obvious holes where they mount vertically on the back of the speaker.

When these bolts are removed, one tweaks the Nested Box by hand to get maximum isolation from the main cabinet.

I can't remember if there are any transit bolts for the bass units at the bottom of the cabinet. It should be obvious if there are.

Good luck.

If I remember correctly, the transit bolts are clearly marked.
The tweeter set-up is the same as for the DBL's I believe, instructions relating to that are on the DBL instruction manual available on-line.
When checking for any "rock" in the stands, be aware that there is some movement due to the sprung bases. Make sure there is no actual rock of the spikes, or if mounting on an un-carpeted floor, you might like to use "chips" like I do, which makes it easy to detect any rocking on the spikes.
You WILL need a helping hand!

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Before fitting the nested box transit screws, be sure to secure the piece of wood where the transit bolts are inserted. Retight the four screws, they are generally loose after 1 year of usage.
Don`t forget the paper spacers on the bottom transit bolts.

Thanks for the info folks.

The vendor turned out to be a complete waste of space.

I made a 150 mile round trip, took cash, a large vehicle and a sack barrow ready to do the deal. When I got there he couldn’t decide if he wanted to sell them or not and by the time I got home he had emailed me and put the already high price up by £500.

If there is one thing I hate it’s a messer Mad

Graham,

Sorry to hear about the undecided (and greedy!) vendor. There's no excuse for that kind of behaviour especially when you put forth the effort to arrange money and transportation for the speakers. I'm sure you were very excited about the possibility of NBLs too.

I've been in a similar situation so I know how you feel. Hopefully another deal will present itself. I would avoid this person unless he's willing to go below your initial offer.

Hi Arun,

Thanks, there are plenty of NBLs out there but I just hate being messed about and wasting time on these people.

Anyway never mind Cool

Graham,
Don't give up on NBL's, they work so well - big sound from a reasonable size. Regarding the +£500, it might just be worth it especially if they're in first class condition. Interpretations of VGC tend to vary.

Regarding the packing, I believe it depends on the age, but mine have an aluminium and cork sandwich which has to be bolted on over the mid-range unit. This means you'll need to re-torque the bolts after transit. Also, make sure you install the cardboard cover over the front of the top box before inserting the bolts at the rear. The two bolts for the bass unit are low down on the back and have U-shaped cards inserted before bolting to ensure correct positioning.

Check the alignment of the tweeter too, and have a good look at he grille covers - are they fraying etc.? And, of course, make sure you get the boxes!

Best of luck finding some.
Regards,
CB

Thanks Clive. Bosh from this forum has kindly emailed me the transit instructions as well.

I saw the ebay ones and have mailed the seller but so far no reply.

The ‘messer’ speakers were mint to be fair. He said they had never been used and I believed him. All the transit items were in place, crossovers, spikes and grill mesh never fitted.

They were already top price and I wouldn’t buy them now on principal, I just hate to be messed about.

I’ve not given up; I have two pairs to look at this week and an offer of a mint beech pair from a forum member if I can’t find any decent cherry ones.

Most on offer seem to be 1999 or 2000 and I was hoping to find a newer pair.

Picked up a pair in Rosewood on Friday after a number of enquiries to various dealers. They were 160 miles away, but I found that for the same price I paid, there were a couple pairs at dealers in cherry at the same price, that had marks, scuffs and dents in them, so I was prepared to travel to get the right pair, particularly as the SBL's I'm replacing are Rosewood and blend in nicely with the decor of my room.

I am really happy as my pair are absolutely mint, look gorgeous and sound fantastic.

I would like to thank Martin (Blythe) for inviting me to listen to his system before I made the final decision, as a home dem of NBL's was out of the question. He really does have a nice setup, and the fact that they worked so well in what I think purists would consider an imperfect setup convinced me that they would be alright in my more modest listening room.

Cheers
Ade

Congrats on a good purchase, the NBL's are something else and the rosewood finish is stunning!

We're getting a lot of enquiries about NBLs at the factory. Just so you know, there are a few pairs available with some of our dealers - for example is a brand new pair for sale at the Studio if anybody is looking....

How far from the rear wall wall should NBL's go? Is it sensible to have them firing across a room that is only 10 feet wide?
