Online webspace providers
Posted by: garyi on 06 February 2005
Hi guys, now I am finally sorted on broadband I would like to get some online space sorted out, I don't think metronet give you anything.
I don't want to use the free services online, there has to be something going on their to make it worth their while, and I want the space to back up important files etc.
So what options are out there, the first one is .mac from Apple which comes to around a fiver each month, so something cheaper than that!

Does the .mac package include a domain?

I don't think so, but I am not fussed about that I just want somewhere to stick files.

The cheapest package I know of comes out at about £6 a month (webfusion.co.uk). I'm sure there are others but I wouldn't like to comment on the quality of a provider I haven't used. It's so hit and miss - unfortunately.
Cheers

20 megs something like that, nothing special.
Its a shame you can't use all the space Yahoo gives for your emails.

I've often wondered if one couldn't use a blog as a free hosting website(?)

Breaking my embargo for the second time in two days
If you use the www.Photobox.co.uk
you get 50mB every time you place an order - you can store photos on this site and view them as well as order prints and as the owner of the space via the logging on process you can do a save back to your machine of the full size image - I do not how long they will allow one to keep images on their disks without ordering
additional prints though
If you are not dealing with JPEG files this process is not approprite
What are your objectives for storing the data remotely - in the past there has been online storage places disappearing at short notice.

Hi Derek, it will be for storing pictures to link to websites such as this one, as well as my address book just as back up.
As an additional note I am sorting out my harddrive since the new install and thus far the trash can is deleting 92,000 files.
I remember when I had a mac 512ke with two (yes two) floppy drives, one for the system (20 or so files) and one for your application of choice.
Boy oh boy how times have changed.

Yep!
.mac is probably not the cheapest but it is piss easy to use with a mac... small things like being able to publish a photo album straight from iPhoto in one click and a few other convienient links with OSX, iDisk, back up, file sharing etc etc. The email account is not bad either, i like the way that you can use 5 email addresses on one account and change them whenever you want to dump the spam when it gets too much...
regards
sad mac addicted hawk...

Third violation
Photobox is not suitable for linking to images
suggest you look at something called
SMUGMUG
or PBASE
google for the correct addresses
Pity you did not go for PlusNet - I get 250mb of disk space with them.

GoDaddy.com gives you your own domain for $8.95 US a year and then you have several email options to choose from. I'm using a plan that has 1GB of space available and more email addresses than I'll ever use. Something like $15 a month for that.
Their service is VERY good, the few questions I've had have been answered promptly and provided resolution. Don't know if they offer services for Europe though.
Check them out.

For your data backup you could set up a web mail subscription with Yahoo or GMail who provide quite a large amount of disk space for the mail to be stored on.
You then attach the data to emails that you send to your new Yahoo/GMail email address and then leave the email on the server until you need it
If you leave the data on the server for several generations of data you have created an audit trail of the changes that you have made to the data.

I tend to be old fashioned with hosting providers and don't trust the gigantic $1 a month outfits, fine when it works but when it doesn't etc..
There are loads of hosting providers out there so everyone will have an opinion, I would suggest take a look at someone like Black Cat Networks, small (in the scheme of things) yet from all I've seen/heard clueful.
I haven't looked at .mac but initial impressions are a lot of money for what seems to come down to neat integration.
cheers,
Paul
