Devore Gibbon8 speakers
Posted by: Rich Jerskey on 24 March 2004
Hello. I've seen reference to these speakers on this forum regarding a demo at Hawthorne stereo in Seattle. I checked them out on the web and they've got very, very glowing praise on any review I could come across.
Can anyone further comment on them working with Naim gear. Their setup, issues, etc. etc.
I'm using SBL's now but wanted to consider an alternative down the road perhaps.
Thanks for any response.

Yah-- I'd be really interested too-- these speakers cant suck all THAT bad with such glowing praise-- just hope they didnt garner it all because they are tremendously round-earth in their music-making--
a quality sure to win Stereophile-type accolades.

Yea but the fact that they "bowled over" the folks at Hawthorne Stereo having a Naim demo a while back is significant in and of itself.
Anyone else?

FWIW,
I corresponded briefly with Hawthorne and was told that the Devore8's work great with Naim but that they would not be an improvement over what I have now.

Rich,
The Dvore's are great...I heard their new 15,000 speaker at CES and it very good. Having said that, SBLs are in a in another universe. The best upgrade you can do for your system is to ditch the PS audio thingy. Have you tried the wiremold and a dedicated circut?

Why do you say that, Chris?
I do have a dedicated circuit.

Rich,
From the NANA web site:
POWER CONDITIONERS
Our customers often inquire about the purchase of a power conditioner suitable for a Naim Audio system.
You absolutely do not need one--every power conditioner we know of reduces musical performance dramatically.
Do not be fooled--power conditioners will make your system worse in every case. (A few will make one area a little better while ruining fifty other areas--that is the best case we have seen!)
If the power is dirty, you can't improve it with a power conditioner without taking away some of the remaining quality and punch.

PS AUDIO P500
Chris,
As I understand it and as PS Audio describes, the P500 is a power regenerator. It basically cleans, regulates and regenerates the power for the system plugged in. When I first got the P500, it was a significant difference in a very positive way. A real upgrade for my system. I then disconnected it and put in a dedicated spur. I listened to the system, with new dedicated circuit, for several weeks without the P500. When I reconnected the P500, the difference was rather subtle which leads me to confirm the fact that the unit was doing a very good job of cleaning the power. It also protects against surges and other potential electrical hazards. It doesn't color the sound and isn't your typical "power conditioner" as I'm sure others on this Forum will attest to.
Rich
p.s. might be worth kicking off a new thread on this as there are others using P500 that could give their experience if they want.

Rich,
You are almost correct. The P500 is simply not a "power conditioner" and therefore does not need comparison with such units. Chris is correct that power conditioners dont work. Fortunately, the P500 is not one. It regenerates the mains by means of an amplifier. However, where you are correct and where Chris is sadly wrong, is the bucket load of benefits of such a unit. I remain totally pleased with my purchase and continue to hear new and better things from my system.
Maybe Chris wants you to throw your P500 in his direction!!

Wiremold sounded confused and muddy like a typical computer grade power strip.
Go figure.
I still prefer plugging gear direcctly to dedicated mains.

I thought the wiremold was bad too, till Chris Koster showed me how to use in properly. It really is amazing...way better than the PS Juice Bar and other "fancy" power strips I tried.
I have pulled several PS audio thingys out of Naim systems. Typically there are other set-up problems which mask how much damage the PS audio unit is doing.

Rich,
I recently dem'd the Gibbon 8's at Hwathorne. They are really strong all-arounders. I thought they were just as good with the speed and rhythm stuff as Allaes and Neat Elites, but had a warmer presentation, and better low frequency extension (than the Elite, at least). The only reason I didn't buy them was the size of my room.
I suspect we'll be hearing a lot about this brand for quite a while

are you refering to the order in which components should be pugged into the wiremold?

PS Audio
I am using 4 of their duplex receptacles in my dedicated circuit- they replaced some 'hospital grade' Hubbel jobbies and resulted in a cleaner and more extended sound as compared to the Hubbels. There is also a far snigger fit grasping the blades of the plug. At about $50 per duplex they are not cheap, but for what they do they are inexpensive.
I am still considering a P500 to be used ONLY on the Armageddon for the express purpose of getting a decent 45rpm option.

Bruce,
I appreciate that the Devore8's are what a lot of people say they are. I look forward to hearing them someday. I also appreciate the straight-forwardness of Hawthorne Stereo regarding my inquiries about the Devore's and my current SBL's.

I was using a Wiremold strip until recently when I bought a PS Audio Juice Bar. In theory it should be better as each socket is star wired as opposed to bus wired but I have to say something didn't sound quite right, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I realized there is a kind of electronic haze or sheen over the sound, almost like a veil. Going back to the Wiremold it seems much more natural and believable. Ah well, you live and learn. Other than the order in which the components are plugged in to the strip I'd be interested to learn any other tips to improve the Wiremold.
