135 - sound different with vintage?

Posted by: Christopher on 17 March 2004

Hi

I'm looking to buy 135s to replace my 180. Has anybody heard the difference between 135s of differing vintages? I hear that the transformer supplier was changed in 1990, after which the sound became a little harsher? Anybody done the comparison?

Thanks

The older power amps have a warmer and softer sound. I prefer the older sound but you may not.

Try to srounge a listen from a fellow forum member. I am in Swindon and you are welcome to listen to mine.

Hello,

I had once 135s, Serial Number 88XXX and they were only a litte improvement in transparency towards my NAP250 Serial Number 12XXXX and a loss of "room feeling". I sold them again and never regretted.
Now I have 135s Ser.Nr.19XXX, but serviced and styled to Olive Style. This pair is much better than the NAP 250 in transparency and easyness of reproduction and the "room feeling" is nearly as good. (With my Avanti III speakers, a NAC52 in front). There is no softness to the sound, it is very precise.
I heared that from one model even in the same year there are differences between each produced amplifier. So I am not sure if the differences go back to the vintage.
Do you have a chance to listen to the ones you want to buy?
