Too large a hole!

Posted by: steve barnard on 13 March 2004

I just got home with a 196o's impluse Lawrence Brown's All-Stars record I brought for $2 - great condition or so I thought. But the hole is a couple of mm too large - do I just centre it the best I can or am I damaging my cartridge? Is there anything I can do but chuck it out? Any help appreciated.

Weird!!
Best thing to do is play it to find if it's worth the effort, and if it is, find suitable piece of rubber tube to fit over the spindle to take up the slack & centre it on the platter. Failing that, wrap masking tape around the spindle until it fits, pull it off and put talc on the inside to loose the sticky, and use it as a sleeve next time.

Hey, too big a hole is not as bad as too small a one! Smile

A problem that porly centered holes on LP's creates in an audible distortion in sound (most apparent to me on piano music). The remedy for LP's with poorly centered holes is to drill out the hole slightly oversize so it can be manually centered.

Think yourself lucky on this LP as you will be able to make sure it is centered every time.

Just looking on the bright side Smile

Steve,
I take it you don't own a Roksan turntable? Read their design brief on the original Xerxes. You may start drilling out all your records.
