PC Soundcards - what to buy ?
Posted by: Steveandkate on 19 March 2004
Hi,
Can anyone shed some light on the subject - I am about to buy a new pc, and one of the main uses will be for compiling cd's from my vinyl and cds for my own use, obviously !
So, any suggestions as to what soundcard to go for please ?
Thanks,
Steve

Last Month's Future Music Magazine did a round up of all the main soundcards.
Echo, Terratec and Motu came out well for desktop machines.
Do you need MIDI / digital I/O / GM sound source ?

Ok - My needs are basic - just ripping and burning, and it will be plugged into either my old set-up or the Naim gear - so no need for digital I/O(I guess - tell me more..) no need for midi and as for GM sound source - what is that ?
As my compilations are made for in car or walkman use the utmost quality is not essential, but then again, some will be played via the stereo..
Cheers for your time guys,
Steve

Steve,
"so no need for digital I/O(I guess - tell me more..)"
This lets you take the PC sound output to a seperate, higher quality external DAC, and also get in data from other sources, or an external ADC.
no need for midi
i.e. no external keyboard module input / output
and as for GM sound source - what is that ?
GM = General Midi, a standardised set of sounds used in some older applications to play tunes i.e. Sound 1 = Grand Piano ....Sound 128
You can download General MIDI files off the net and play them in bits, speed up, slow down, edit etc.
If you are after a basis set up, perhaps one of the Creative cards might be worth looking at, although they do have to change the smples rate to 48Khz internally. Terratec do a reasonable series of cards with good sound quality, multiple outputs if you want to do multichannel sound etc.

DS - You are being a whopper help here...
I have a naim CDX, XPS, 52/Super, plus a Marantz CD burner. I want to record a load of vinyl and cd's to the hard-drive of the pc to make compilations. That is all. The pc may well be connected to the hifi at times - So,do I need digital in/out for that..?
Midi and GM are not needed.
I do have an old DAC if needed, but can I not connect the pc direct to the 52 input/output for recording and playback..?
Many thanks for your help,
Steve
