Mozart Haydn SQs

Our conversation seems to have gone into the ether. I'll try and find it again when I get back to work.
In answer to your question Herm, the ABQ recording is Teldec. Might this mean that I just don't like Mozarts SQs, even non-plastic ones?

Ah, good you thought of giving this topic a second shot at life, Stephen.
Yes, if you don't like the ABQ Mozarts - the Teldec ones - there is a chance Mozart is not your thing.
That would mean you're Totally Lost As Far As I'm Concerned. (Not That It Matters.)
So what I'd do is try to get hold of a bunch of late Mozart SQs by the Talich Qt on Calliope. That's going to be quite different from the ABQ. Chances are you'll like that a lot better.
And if you don't it's quite simple. The route for you is forward rather than backward.
During the period the forum was down I actually "studied" the 575 and 589 quartets by the ensembles I mentioned in the thread that went up the e-chimney, playing two different Amadeus recordings (50s and 60s), the Italiano and the 70s ABQ. I thought the 60s Amadeus was the most vivid. The ABQ was good in 575 but turned weirdly pretty and pretentious in the (difficult) 589.

Stephen,
I think I mentioned the Quartetto Italiano boxset of the Mozart quartets, which is available at bargain price. I have just noticed that DG have released a boxset of the Amadeus Quartet playing Brahms, Haydn, Mendelssohn and Schubert in their Original Masters series, which might be worth investigating.
I think I also mentioned the Lindsays in Haydn, but forgot to mention the one Haydn work that I do listen to reasonably regularly - The Seven Last Words of Christ - I have the Juilliard Quartet version, which I think is very good.
Herm - I haven't seen much of you recently - are you taking a sabbatical from fora (always to be recommended)?
David

I've just stuck [another]toe in the water and ordered the Talich quartet on Calliope playing Mozart 18 and 19 SQs. It was under a fiver [UK pounds], so I thought I can't get my toes burnt to much. Does plastic burn?
I'll let you know if I am Totally Lost As Far As Herm Is Concerned
I am heading for Haydn, now. I like the idea of Seven Last Words, I have a piano trio by a contempory titled same. I could compare.

In Haydn I would recommend starting at the end, with the Op 76 string quartets, pref by the Tatrai. However, the various seven last words should make an interesting comparison.
David, thanks for asking. I don't venture in the Hifi Corner any longer, being quite satisfied with what I have. The topics I can relate to have occurred numerous times before, and then there are a lot of topics on more recent stuff I cannot relate to.
However I do post here if there's a classical thing I can contribute to. I have to confess I go to a classics-only board these days for more traffic, though it's never as fun as it used to be on this board when there were more classical posters.

Do you mind if I ask where this board is? Thanks, David

David the board I was referring to has been down for a couple days now. However, I have sent you a PM.

Well. Thanks to the thread I started listenibg to my ABQ recording, and found myself enjoying it, somewhat. Then the Talich recording arrived. Thanks Herm, yes I did enjoy it more. The instruments seemed more seperate, clearer, and more real. Is it a period instrument recording?
I also enjoyed, somewhat, the seven words, again by the Talich. The reult is that i now intend to have a go at more Haydn. I think for some I might go the the Mosaiques Qt, what do the cognicenti think. Bye the way, the Tatrai only seem to be available as an expensive import from the USA.
bet wishes to all
thanks again
