Digital camera lenses

I am a relative novice when it comes to digital cameras and have had my eye on a Kodak LS633 (3MP) camera, mainly for its 2.2" viewing screen and its "Schneider" lens (which I guess is of above-mainstream quality). I can get it for about £167 on the net and £199 at my local camera shop. My last use of a digital camera was my ancient office 1.3MP Mavica (with floppy disc) for close-ups of wear/damage on engine parts, and the resulting pics were very good even at 640k.
I was wondering just how important lens quality is on digital cameras and if similarly-priced & specced Sonys (with a "Sony" lens), Olympuses or even Panasonic (2MP but with a Leica lens) may be better or worse. Any thoughts? Most of the pics will be simple point and shoot of my little boy, with the occasional ambitious landscape composition.

Cheers
