A thread for non-dancers
Posted by: Kevin-W on 24 March 2004
I was rather irritated by some comments in the Kraftwerk thread elsewhere on this forum, about people not dancing at concerts.
In the 25 years I've been going to gigs, I've never danced at a concert (unless you count jumping up and own at New Order concerts in the 1900s). I'm quite happy for people to dance at concerts (as long as they don't tread on my tootsies), but I've never been able to understand (or indeed stand) twats (some of them in bands) who slag me off for not dancing.
Why can't people enjoy a gig in whichever way they choose? Why does one have to act like one of Colonel Parker's infamous electrocuted chickens in order to be seen to be enjoying a musical performance? We pays our ticket money, we can eact in whichever way we chooses.
So, if anyone else gets irritated by the Fun Nazis, join this thread!

I guess 'dancing' is used in the loosest sense here...
I am old enough to remember headbanging (does this count?) with long hair and dandruff flicking about everywhere.
This was shortly followed by the pogo accomapanied by showers of gob etc.
At many concerts the crush a the front was often unbearable, you could lift your feet and be carried around in the crowd, much like on the football terraces before Hillsborough.
I was at a Who gig where people were literally fight their way back out of the crush carrying the limp bodies of friends who had fainted in the heat.
Is this supposed to be fun? Maybe I'm (we're) just getting old.
If you want to dance go to a disco.

I wouldn't say I dance as such, but I do surrepticiously nod my head in a cool but nonchalont way. I might also have a sly tap-of-the-foot when no-one's looking.
Mind you, that's also how I danced in them there discotheques......
Dance if you like, stand still if you like, it doesn't bother me, but what I despise, what I utterly HATE, are those, those, tossers who greet the intro to EVERY song with wild cheering and clapping - what's that for ? To show that they recognise each song? to show that they're happy that the band is playing a song they like(hardly a big fucking surprise)??
I can't remember who or where, but I saw a performer stop playing after this happened several times and ask "OK, what is it then?" - new song, no-one knew.....
Wankers.

I don't do the "D" word either, but these are the things that infuriate me at gigs;
1. People walking to and from the bar while the band are playing - the line of people always seems to be passing in front or behind me.
2. People who talk throughout the gig - difficult when Motorhead are playing, but very annoying at a quiet gig.
3. People who tap their feet out of time to the music - it happened to me at a Tommy Smith gig - really distracting.
4. Hecklers - if you don't like the band, piss off home and don't spoil it for everyone else.

Could not stay still at a Quo concert standing up and swaying about was required, nearest I get to "dancing".
BLT I'm with you on all 4 of those. Surely you can wait 90 odd minutes between drinks. You would have thought prices at most gigs would have put people off paying.

Kevin,
Enjoy the gig how you like.
As for Dancing, most people at Gigs or in disco's don't seem to have a clue how to dance.
Its easy to spot anybody who knows how.

You've seen New Order 66 times and you don't dance!!!!!! I only dance at gigs: never did at discos or clubs, only when I've got someone to watch. Even, sadly, while watching Ozamatli last week, aged 43 with my arms in the air like I just didn't care. Felt great!

What's dancing?

I agree, but you have to admit watching the "dancers" at a grateful dead show is half of the fun, especially when you appear be 1/4 mile from the stage.......

I won't be going to a gig with you lot then. What a cheery bunch you aren't.

Rasher:
I only go to gigs to be miserable and scowl...
Kevin:
No, I've never danced at New Order, but I have jumped up and down on occasion...
