Compatibility of Naim 250 power amplifier with Passive Pre-Amp

Posted by: MHYu on 19 March 2004

Hello
My current system is as follow :
1. CD Player : Marantz CD-7
2. Pre Amp : Audio Synthesis Passion passive unit
3. Power Amp : Conrad Johnson MV60
4. Loudspeaker : Sonus Faber Signum

Since I find a used Naim 250 power amp at a decent price, kindly advise the following issues related to its compatibility with my current system :
1. Does the Naim 250 work with my passive pre-amp?
2. Does the Naim 250 necessarily have to be used with Naim's own pre-amp for better effect of pace and rhythm? If so, does it work well with the old 32.5 pre-amp with Snap power supply? (I am considering this used pre-amp because of my rather tight budget at this moment)
3. Does Naim 250 offer much better pace and rhythm and dynamic punch than that of the Conrad Johnson MV-60?

I would like to keep using my CD player and speakers at this moment. Your advise will be much appreciated!

Thanks.

I think I'm right in saying that Naim are OK with a Naim pre-amp into anything else, but not the other way round, as the pre-amp defines the operating parameters of the power amp.

It'll probably work, but is apparently not advisable.

E-mail Naim directly for advice.

Naim preamps don't limit the bandwith to 20Khz, that's more around 40KHz.
Naim amps can have "eratic behaviours" if feed by a high impedance source (the preamp). So be cautious with a passive pre, try it. Check for over heating and RFI interferences (generally audible).
A 32.5/SNAPS is a safe 250's companion for "pace and rhythm and dynamic punch" on a tight budget.
