Isn't bestiality illegal in Britain??? (sorry - couldn't resist).
I've not had time to read this thread all the way through (actually, just come in at the end) but two questions:
1) why couldn't big ears marry CPB back in the 70s?
2) what HAS the Queen actually really DONE in the last 30 years, rather than walking around, smiling, and eating expensive food? *I* could do that and not balls it up. She's certainly (AFAIK) never overuled parliament on anything or anything like that - why couldn't she stop us going to war (well, invading, really) Iraq, for example?
And that age-old chestnut - can you live with having a hypocrite in power if Charles gets the throne? Hmm - twin divorcees with one as the head of the Church - great. Would be even worse if it was the Catholic church!!! My parents had to marry in a piddly side chapel because my dad dared to be Protestant rather than my mum's Catholic - yet another reason I ditched religion years ago...

the queen - apart from fundamentally disagreeing with her being there she has behaved and carried out her duties in a dignified manner. Can't complain about that. By any standards though she is head of a truly disfunctional family.
Charles - openly shagging somebody else while married to Diana (as was she). Treated her with complete contempt. "Wished he was Camilla's tampon". Fiddling the books.
Phillip - several affairs as a younger man. When was the last time he and the queen shared a bed? Totally out of touch with reality.
Andrew - used RAF planes and helicopters at a cost of thousands when he could have travelled more economically to his generally golfing related engagements.
Edward - an arrogant obnoxious buffoon commonly known as Gloria to his close friends. Another one totally out of touch with reality.
Harry - an idiot who needs to be taken across his father's knee and given a good thrashing.
Anne - a decent sort.
Princess Margaret - an alcoholic tart.
I can't be bothered continuing but obviously if you start going back through the generations there's a staggering list of Nazi sympathisers, alkies, womanisers etc but I'm sure there are folk more knowledgeable about them than I who can continue.

And lets not forget that according to the rumours (and that scurrilous American woman who mkaes stuff up to sell more copies of her biographies) the Queen was born of a turkey baster impregnation as her father suffered from an unfortunate condition called micro-penis that made a conventional conception impossible.
However, Princess Margaret rocked. At least in the early 60s.

I didn't realize that Charles had substantial interests that weren't directly or indirectly linked to the land or bought with income from the land that came with the job. What property are we talking about?
I think that they have the same moral failings and human worth as the rest of us and as such do not deserve the fawning adulation never mind respect that is accorded them by certain sections of the population. I don't actually wish them ill, I just they should live like us with no special breaks, no better, no worse. They should have to live the reality of business or academic failure as well as learning how to make something from nothing, off their own backs.
Having lived and worked in Windsor, I have already had a lifetime of pushing my way through crowds of royal watchers and monarchists. By and large they've been pleasant and excitable people, yet sad and not very bright with small lives and a need to have something secure to hold on to, no matter how tawdry and devalued the institution has clearly become and an imcomprehensible belief that the royal family really cares about their lives or what they think. IMO completely delusional, but I suppose it keeps them happy, opiate for the masses if you will.

And this list comprises your evidence for saying that they have the morals of sewer rats?
Weak, in my view.

Rats don’t have morals - it's a human construct. That’s the real weakness.
They have the morals of grasping, opportunist, privileged, selfish, ignorant, humans.
Quite typical, really.
It’s not their fault they were born to this; but they could easily get out of it, so I’ve no sympathy.
The royalty is the apex of the remnants of the still powerful British system of privilege and favour.
That’s why it has to go in a truly democratic system.

As someone who used to do a lot of libel law (no longer, thank goodness), I'd be a bit careful about the alleged turkey baster and the late Queen Mum! You don't want to land Adam with a libel writ.

She works pretty hard, Dom, certainly harder than most of us. She's also coming up to 79 years old, an age at which even less of us will be working that hard.
If you're really as ignorant about the Queen's work programme as you say, then you can get some idea of her functions at this site (amongst many).
You say that you could 'do that and not balls it up'. In fact, in this very post you've ballsed it up already (by the Queen's standards). Imagine the Queen making a similar comment about, say, the Pope.

If she works as hard as you claim Steve myself and plenty of other NHS workers, teachers, building workers, shop workers etc.... would gladly swap jobs with her. It must be really difficult going on all those holidays and attending all those banquets.
Incidentally, I remember reading a few years ago, that most of the countries she visits actually show a decrease in trade with the UK. The french chopped the head off of their monarch over 200 years ago and tourists still flock to France.

When was that then, the sixties, seventies?

The Nazi uniform incident was fairly recent but is a long and honoured family tradition. That is why I was puzzled by the shock which accompanied Harry's upper-class 'jape'. The Queen mum (God bless 'er) and Edward (of Mrs. Simpson fame) would certainly have admired the sight and sentiment.

Meanwhile, many will no doubt be delighted to learn that the value of Her Majesty's private stash on the stockmarket has fallen from £77m in 2000 to a paltry £56m in 2004.

You're right Steve. I threw it together far too quickly and it makes them seem like a much nicer bunch than they actually are.

I agree that the Queen probably works very hard, but the question is more whether her work is of any value to us, or if we wouldn't miss it

Thanks for the "NOT work friendly" warning... I might have clicked and then been fired.
Then you'd all be sick of me posting on the forum while burning up my severence pay!
Long Live the Queen. Oh, I see she's done that already!

I heard for the first time yesterday that (verified by some of Our Mat's Top Journo wallers)Diana Spencer's father came rushing out of his place of abode to gleefully inform assembled afore-mentioned vultures that his daughter had just been examined and measured and was pronounced a virgin.
