Nait 5 as a power amp

Posted by: alex95 on 14 March 2004

Hi
Read somewhere before that someone was using a Nait 5 as a power amp, how would this be possible ?
Can a 202 be added as a pre amp and how could this be done.
Thanks
Spence

okyknot in the "Why so much volume on the 202?" thread is who you are thinking of and you are right a proper poweramp is what he requires.

A 200 would be a good buy for him as its a good match for a 202

The nait 5 is extremely flexable. The power amp section and the pre-amp section are wholly distinct - Naim even went so far as to run seperate power and ground lines through the "link cable" connecting the power-in socket to the pre-out socket.

Hence, when the link cable is removed (those two little shorting plugs on the back with the little bit of ribbon cable connecting them), the power amplifier is available for use with a more competant pre-amp. As I said before, it even provides a power rail and a ground reference.

Looks a bit lame to have two boxes with dials on though. I just use mine as naim intended.

Hello Spence,
I used my Nait 5 as a power amp while waiting for a NAP 150. It worked very well (better than I expected) but not better than the 150. I would not buy a Nait for the sole reason to use as power amp, if you already own it then fine. I would like to upgrade to NAP 200 or 250 down the road when the right deal comes along.
Good Luck,
Dan

Skip the 200 and save for a 250

Hello Peter,
My thoughts as well. I don't think the 200 would be a big step up from 150. Since I already have a Hicap, I believe the 250 would be a better choice.
Thanks,
Dan

I agree

The advantage of the 250 is its a dedicated poweramp, unlike the 200.

Its a lot better than your 150 as you say

I ran my Nait 5 as a power amp whilst waiting to buy a real power amp at the right price.

I believe you can only do this when you have a *cap available.

Not true. The nait 5 when used as a power amplifier provides a single 24 VDC rail to run a preamp. You don't need to have a *cap available.

Not true, as Justin points out, but a *cap is a more logical first step imho. I use a Nait 5 with a HiCap. It's still not the limiting factor in the system.
