Imagine

Imagine, imagine a storeeeeeeeee...
In a field, not far away, lives a herd of cows. One of the cows is rather unusual. Blue Cow wonders. She wonders what things are like outside the field.
"I wonder what it would be like to see The Beatles?"
"Oh, she's off again" said the other cows.
So Blue Cow caught the bus that stops by the field.
She said to the driver, "I'd like to go somewhere where I can see the Beatles please"
When the bus arrived she met someone with a bad haircut wearing a tight suit and carrying a guitar.
"Hello, I'm Blue Cow, I'd like to see the Beatles"
"Well, your in luck love" said the man in a fake Liverpudlian accent, "I'm John and I'm just about to play a gig with my friends Paul, George and Ringo. Would you like to come along?"
"Oh yes please!" said Blue Cow.
So Blue Cow sat down with the rest of the audience. She felt at home amongst all the blue rinsed ladies.
John and his friends got on stage and played lots of songs in the style of The Beatles. After a few songs they went off stage and came back wearing different clothes and played a few more songs. Blue Cow really enjoyed the show and they even sang a song that they dedicated to her called "Strawberry Fields". They had a break in the middle and Blue Cow had a refreshing snack of grass and water. The audience clapped politely and stood up and waved their arms in the air, Blue Cow just nodded in time to the tunes.
After the show, Blue Cow returned to her field.
"You'll never guess where I've just been" said Blue Cow
"Where have you been?" said the other cows
"I've been to see the Bootleg Beatles."
"Every one knows cows can't go to see the Bootleg Beatles."
But we know they can, don't we.

It was one of Mike £acey's Japanese import pressings of Rubber Soul...
I think I've watched CBeebies too often with Miss Seagull.
It was my first "tribute band" gig and it felt a bit like rock'n'roll as pantomime what with the costume changes and the audience participation and reaction. No, it was nothing like a real Beatles gig would have been (see list below). It was fun and I enjoyed it. The music was good, well they had a pretty good selection of songs to choose from. The playing was good, I think the drummer was better than I ever remember Ringo being. I'm not sure whether the costume changes enhanced the show or just ruined the flow (from my point of view it was the latter). I'm not a Beatles' fan but I think the running order would have been better if it hadn't been in chronological order. The psychedelic period slowed things down a little rather than building to a climax. The concert sound seemed to suffer when they added the string section (well cello and violin), the mix was all wrong on Strawberry Fields though it picked up again after the interval.
We had seats right at the back of the hall at the sell-out gig (c 1200 capacity) so I was able to people watch as well.
- 'Paul McCartney' was right handed
which was, for some reason, somewhat distracting.
- It was the first concert for ages when I actually felt quite young (even though Malcolm had brought his First Born (18) and seagull jr (16) had gone with me).
- People just in front of us were passing round... Maltesers and Black Magic chocolates.
- The queue at the tea bar was just as long as the queue for the bar (Mike £acey was on the tea but he was (a) driving and (b) he had had a skinful the night before!)
- People got up to 'dance', well sway from side to side then sat down at the end of the song!
- No-one screamed
- Some of the audience applauded the film clips they played during costume changes
- Seagull jr thought that the Twist was hilarious when done by the 60 somethings in the row in front.
- It occurred to me that it was very possible that none of the audience had ever seen the real Mop Tops play live.
- At one point I closed my eyes and wondered what the Fab Four would have sounded like live, which rather bizarrely gave me the idea for the initial post
- Yellow Submarine was, is and always will be, a crap song
- Hey Jude does go on forever
- Gales HSB isn't as good as it used to be
- The Bootleg Beatles have been going 25 years, how long did the real ones last? (A bit like M*A*S*H lasting longer than the Korean war it was set in)
- They didn't play "Imagine"

So errm....Seagull, if you don't mind me asking, were you old enough to go to an original Beatles gig....??

Cheers,
JR

I am mortified - I will stop by at the brewery tomorrow and tell them of your displeasure
The good citizens of Horndean will be hurling themselves off the motorway bridge in humiliation <g> at your disappointment

Well I was 15 when Johnny Rotten first swore on tv...
HSB went downhill when Gales had that deal with Watneys and they increased production. Also when they reduced the strength from 5.1% to 4.8% for tax reasons

Hmm....just, then

I'm not really sure what the point of the initial post was, Seagull; whatever, I commiserate with you...I have a love/hate relationship with the idea (and reality) of Beatles tribute bands; the reality can be a bit sad, but many alive now never got to experience the real thing
...
My $.02's worth: I'm someone of the age to have endless Beatles merch marketed right to me (born 1953, my impressionable school years happened right when the Beatles' records were being issued); but I tend to cringe when the latest thing comes out (The Capitol Albums Vol. I being the latest). The inevitable result of all this modern mass-marketing is people becoming cynical about the Beatles, which is a disaster; today's pop scene is weak enough without the greatest influence of the past being eroded by greed.
I would have been happy if they'd stopped with the Anthology CDs and video; when the remastered British CDs finally emerge (the one Beatles product I want) I'm afraid there'll be a roaring indifference.
My biggest fear is for a younger generation who won't be allowed to discover the Beatles for themselves; they'll be hyped, and a bit resentful of the gods of an older age being pushed on 'em.
Based on other posts here, perhaps it's time for me to take up beer.

On your side here Bhazen, for what its worth the Beatles are a victim of there own fullblooded success. And also the fact you can't pin them down. To be honest they lost me when they started taking themselves too seriously. Wish now I'd been able to keep up with them.

I was born late '53 too and was just at the right time tho I had no money for early LPs didn't even get one till my sister got Sgt. Peppers from her boyfriend. Sure opened up a new world to me, I ended up going back to Help and then all the way to the end with them. I have disliked all the anthology stuff, tho I liked their two movies, even Yellow Submarine, tho dislike the actual song. Then as a young adult I had no decent stereo and moved too often to aquire anything, for 20 years, but have now been collecting some on CD some on vinyl. Damn vinyl still skips. They are still my favorite group, so inventive, creative, innovative, whatever.

I was born in '59, which pitched me in at the right time. I remember sitting on the floor at one of my mothers friends with another 7 year old who I didn't know, just playing Rubber Soul over and over again on a portable record player. Funny what you remember. I have no idea where he got it from - probably his sister.

It's probably better to listen/watch at home or at a friend's recordings of The Beatles rather than go to Bootleg B show. Maybe go to show by other people.
