New mobile (Orange). Any suggestions?

Posted by: Rasher on 02 February 2005

It's come to the time of a free upgrade and the last couple of phones I have had have been disappointing. I currently have a Motorola V600, and the battery is knackered. Menus are clumsy in use.
I wanted to go into a PDA type of thing to keep my appointments and wanted to get an end of line Sony Ericsson P900i, but they have all now gone. The new 910i looks good, but they want £200 to upgrade to that one, and it just isn't that important, so any suggestions to alternatives?
Most importantly I need bluetooth which I use in the car constantly, and at least triband. I don't want to use it for email unless it keeps my emails for later, as most of my work emails have drawing attachments that I need to file in the office. I don't see the point of web browsing either unless it's cheap to use. Photos are nice to have too.
What do you lot think is good at the moment?

I'm waiting for them to get a Nokia 6630 in - this probably has everything you're looking for and they've offered it to me free as an upgrade.

Do not touch the Samsung Z107 with a bargepole..

I picked up a Sony Ericsson K700i just before Christmas, FOC with a new O2 contract. Pretty sure it's tri-band, certainly got bluetooth - synchronises well with my Mac for diary and contact information.

I think I'm going Vodafone next and I may get a Motorola E1000. This isn't available with Orange as they still haven't got their 3G network up and running yet...

The 6630 looks cool though and will be compatible with 3G when it finally arrives chez Orange.

A mate has the E1000 and I think it may be worth waiting for as, amongst other things, it comes supplied with USB connection to your pooter, a megapixel camera with flash facility and both front and back lenses for video calls.

Oh, and it's quad band.

Steve,

3G is up and running on Orange, and the 6630 is running as a 3G phone. It too has a megapixel camera (but not, I think, a flash)and is quad band.

I just wish Orange would get some in stock!!

Thanks guys. All these seem to be heavy on the photos and not so good on the PDA side, which is the thing I want really. I might have to end up shelling out for the 910i, but I don't want to spend the money.

Rasher,

Incidentally, if you're already with Orange, make sure that when you ring their Customer Services (on 150) you select options 4,3 (..thinking of leaving Orange) rather than 4,1 (...you want to upgrade your phone). This section seem to be able to offer much better deals in order to keep your custom. You may have already tried this of course, but they offered me the 6630 for free instead of paying about £120 in the shops for it Eek

I took your advice just now, and they have offered me the Sony Ericsson 910i, now, without having to wait until next week, for just £39.99, instead of the usual £199.99 upgrade price. (I took it, of course).
I owe you a beer or two. Smile

Orange have changed their minds.
The phone arrived this morning instead of next week (so less than 24 hours), and they decided not to charge me anything. Smile
I know there was thread complaining about Orange somewhere on this forum, but my experience is good.
Thanks again Kevin.

Rasher,

I'm glad you've got a result - I'm still waiting for them to get a 6630 into stock Frown

They seem to have sorted you out pretty well though

Good luck with the new phone

The phone is excellent which is a relief as I have got it wrong the last couple of times. I have taken the keyboard off, but have put it back on again now. It is actually as good as it appears to be and is now my portable office. I am most impressed by the handwriting recognition and sent a text to mate yesterday that was sent as 4 text messages it was so long!! Text entry is as fast as handwriting, and this is only day 2. Really really good.
Now....did I mention that iPod I'm about to get? Smile

Glad you are enjoying the P910i. Bought mine last October after a slightly frustrating year with a 3 Motorola A920. The P910 is leagues ahead.
I prefer mine without the flip, especially since I loaded a predictive text app. for the touchscreen.

I think it's better without the keyboard. I now need to learn how to use it for music so I won't need an ipod. How do you do it Tony? What compression rate do you use? Do you have a big capacity memory stick?
Posted on: 06 February 2005 by Tony Lockhart
I don't really have the need to play music on it. The only sounds I load are for alerts. Saying that, Teenage Kicks downloaded from imesh took up about 3 meg of mp3, so a 512 MB stick ( http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=81279 ) for £50 could well be more than enough for commuting.
Sorry I'm not much help on this point.
