I'm looking for advice on Oracle software

Posted by: TomK on 02 April 2004

My place of work has used an Oracle database for some years now. Our software supplier has so far done all the required database admin for us as we have very limited Oracle skills. However, as this is now proving to be a bit inconvenient we’re moving towards doing a bit of this stuff ourselves, and we have arranged to evaluate a piece of software called Toad. Does anybody know much about this? Any advice or recommendations?

Tool for Oracle Application Developers is the most useful piece of software I have used in my 20+ years in IT (is it really that long?). Its user interface is fairly intuitive for novice users but it also has a range of powerful tools for developers (like myself) and DBA's.

For example, the schema browser tool enables users to look at the data in tabular form and to transfer data to speadsheets if they are more comfortable with that.

There are far too many features to describe here, I am still discovering new ones...

It takes a lot of the pain out of accessing Oracle databases.

I have been using it for several years now and always ask if they use it at any sites where I work. I have it open in another window as I type this and would not dream of using anything else.

Take that as a recommendation.

I've just completed a (very) long and tiring production upgrade to 11.5.9 of apps and, 'cos Oracle's s/w is so crappy, ahd some excellent times with my amphibian friend in the wee small hours!

TOAD is indispensible - buy it!

Having worked as an Oracle Analyst/Programmer and DBA I would say that TOAD is an essential tool!

Thanks for the advice so far guys. This pretty much confirms what we had heard from other sources.

A few of my developers use Toad (I run an Oracle consulting company) and really like it.
