Edinburgh Congestions charging referendum.

Resounding no vote with 74% against.

It'll be interesting to see how this effects the planning for other schemes elsewhere in the UK. A significant problem in Edinburgh was the poor design of the scheme, so perhaps other councils proposing congestion charging will take more care in future.

Steve,
Much as I'd love to see congestion levels reduced I can't see the public going for this sort of thing until there's a viable public transport system available. Having said that, I very seldom take the car into Edinburgh (or Glasgow for that matter) as we're well situated near the main Glasgow-Edinburgh line. Others are not so lucky though.

Island-bound post-Kyoto prevailing logic wrt to transport policy is all stick no carrot and general counter-intuitivity.

Or, quite simply transport policy is simply an opportunity to raise revenue and control/limit/track movement.

A city the size of Edinburgh in Germany (Stuttgart) has an underground train network with 17 lines.

Install an equivalent system in Edinburgh, then and only then can we talk about congestion charging.
