sbls-how much?

Posted by: scottyhammer on 23 March 2004

hi there,
ive got my eye on a perfect pair of sbl speakers on e bay.
they are around 4yrs old in a nice cherry finish.
what is the current going rate for these??
regards, scotty

I don't think the going rate has much to do with it. Listen to them, compare them to any alternative and I think you will buy them irrespective of the "going rate"
It's supply and demand. They're bloody fantastic speakers. I can't understand why Naim would stop making such a winner.

PS. I've only just discovered them so I'm probably a bit like a "born again non-smoker"

Hi Scotty

I'd be prepared to pay up to around £1,200 for a really nice recent pair.

A veneered back will tell you if they have the later, better cabinet. The earlier cabinet is painted black on the back.

Good luck.

hi jn,
when you say veneered on back , do you mean the same finish as the cabinet?
and arent the later models with updated drivers??
bass cones i think!

Prices vary but I sold my 94 black ones for £450 and paid £1100 for 98 Cherry ones.

Sold on for the same price when I bought NBLs

If they're only 4 years old, they'll already have the latest drivers and yes, the veneerd back is the same as the rest of the cabinet, which again, at that age, I would think they have the latest cabinets.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

After browsing eBay myself, I've decided to wait a few days before putting my Rosewood SBLs and Soundbases on there as, just my luck, there are already 4 pairs of SBL's and a pair of Soundbases for sale there.
Although they aren't in the much more highly desirable premium Rosewood finish of course Smile

I would rather hang on until I can get what several dealers have told me they are worth. I was actually very surprised how much one dealer offered me part-ex for them

Cheers

Don't forget that the last few were sold off at £1500, and a few dealers may still have them - brand new. Try Tom Tom Audio too. 4 years old, I wouldn't want to pay more than about £800-900

If the going rate is £1000 and the current high bid is £5000......

That may be the case but the normal retail for late models was aroung £2400, I paid around that in 1999.

In Cherry I would say pay up to around £1250.

Add £100 or so for Ade's Rosewood examples.

You can of course get them a fair bit cheaper but not with latest cbinets, veneer, drivers etc.

They're nicely tucked up in their boxes now while I decide what's best to do with them.

How much extra did Rosewood cost as a finish?

Cheers
