Settings for peer to peer network?

Posted by: Jez Quigley on 07 April 2004

If I had any hair I would have pulled it all out today.

I have set up a peer to peer network from my main PC to the lad's bedroom PC. I can access the internet from both OK, I can download from the internet ok, I can even play Quake either on the internet or across the Lan. I can 'see', send & retrieve the bedroom PC's shared documents from the main PC.

BUT although I can 'see' the main PC from the bedroom one, I get an error saying something about permissions (although I have set the folder to shared on main PC). Also I have set the main PC printer as shared, but the bedroom PC cant see it, presumably due to the same problem above.

I suspected it may be something to do with Zone Alarm, but even with ZA shutdown the problem remains. Hours of fiddling have born no fruit. Can anyone help?

WinXP on both.

Oh for the good old days of just having to fiddle about with reversed burndies and leveling mana....

You opend share permissions on the "server".
Did you open the file/directory permissions as well. The system uses them in combination and applies what is the most restrictive.

ie share to all
file/directory open only to Fred.
If you are not Fred, you will not get in.

While the share will allow access, the F/D will not.

Just a quick thought...

The driver of the shared printer needs to be installed on all other computers with [networkpath] as destination instead of LPT1/orwhatever.

Hope that helps!

Thanks foryour replies, much appreciated.

The folder 'Shared documents' is set to share with members of the workgroup. However I can't get access to the PC level. All I can get is a display of the PCs in the workgroup, but if I click on the icon for the main PC from the bedroom PC I just get "(name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to us this network resource" etc.

It works fine the other way around i.e. Main PC accessing the bedroom one.
